Mark Corts, former senior pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, passed away on Tuesday after an extended illness. Corts became Calvary’s 13th pastor back in 1964. Corts stepped down in 2002 after a planned retirement. Visitation and funeral arrangements are pending. (calvarynow.com)

Tropical Storm Ernesto dumping lots of rain onto South Florida this morning. Ernesto is expected to track North back out into the Atlantic only to strengthen again before striking South Carolina on Thursday. Storm Warnings have been issued for coastal areas of Georgia up to Cape Fear, N.C.. (weather.com)


In the Pacific, Hurricane John is now a Category Three hurricane with top-sustained winds of 115 mph. Hurricane John is about 130 miles southwest of Acapulco, Mexico.

In the western Pacific, Super Typhoon Ioke (160 mph) is forecast to swirl very close to or over Wake Island tonight

Flight 51-91 had turned his back on the plane after clearing it for takeoff.
NTSB officials confirm that the runway the plane used was too short for the jet. Forty-nine people died in the accident. The co-pilot, the lone survivor, is in critical condition. (AP)

Don Blackmon a 56-year-old Charlotte truck driver won $1 million in Saturday's Powerball drawing by correctly picking five numbers and using the game's Power Play feature to multiply his win by five. After taxes were withheld, his prize was $680,000. The winning ticket was among 25 he purchased at a Circle K in Archdale last on Friday morning. (WS JOURNAL)

A 14-pound baby girl was born in Brazil over the weekend:
Isabel Vitoria was delivered by C-section…born Sunday, measuring close to 23 inches. The largest baby ever born in Brazil: a 16-pound, 11-ounce baby born in January 2005 in Salvador. According to Guinness World Records, the heaviest baby born to a healthy mother was a boy weighing 22 pounds, 8 ounces in Italy, back in 1955. (AP)
