The first phase of the ‘Paul Ciener Botanical Garden’ in Kernersville will be open to the public FREE this weekend.  Saturday is 'Family Day'.  Sunday is 'Gardeners Day' with lectures from several guest speakers including local gardening expert Toby Bost (Toby Q+A at 4pm). No tithing required? A survey released by the National Association of Evangelicals reveals that 58% of evangelical leaders do not believe that the Bible requires a person to tithe…but Christians still need to give from the heart. In the survey, the majority polled say they give at least 10% to the Lord’s work. This contrasts with another report (Empty Tomb, Inc) finding that evangelicals give churches about 4% of their income.


The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has approved sweeping new safety rules, which outlaw drop-side cribs and require stronger hardware and supports. Beginning June 28, all cribs manufactured and sold must comply with the new federal standards. Since 2000, drop-side cribs have been blamed in the deaths of 32 infants and toddlers. Three people were killed yesterday during a 7.1 aftershock in northeastern Japan. More than 140 people were injured. The latest aftershock was the strongest one to hit Japan since the massive earthquake on March 11th.  CNN

With a Federal Government Shut-down looming, no deal has been reached but progress has been made, so says the White House. If a budget deal is NOT met…more than 800,000 non-essential federal workers would undergo a ‘work stoppage’ as of midnight tonight. FYI: Congress still gets paid.  Good news: Social Security checks will still go out. Tax payments and e-filed returns will still happen. US soldiers and FBI agents will remain on the job. With an unstable economy and looming budget deficit, the state of North Carolina is spending $259,000 dollars to renovate one of its mansions. The work is expected to be finished this month on the second governor’s mansion in Asheville. The Governor's primary home is at the Executive Mansion in Raleigh. Car battery thefts are the latest ‘crime trend’ in Charlotte. WCNC-TV reporting that batteries are disappearing from vehicles parked at businesses, church parking lots and in neighborhoods.
