The student currently in charge of the honor code project said it was an oversight. Parts of the Texas honor code draft match word-for-word the online version of Brigham Young University's code.BYU credited the Center for Academic Integrity, but the San Antonio draft doesn't. Cheating experts say it illustrates a sloppiness among Internet-era students who don't know how to cite sources properly and think of their computers as cut-and-paste machines.
Student Akshay Thusu said that when he took over the project a month ago plans to include proper citation when the honor code draft is submitted to the faculty senate. Thusu said (quote) "We don't want to have an honor code that is stolen." The Associated Press (Mar. 30, 2008)

California Homeschool Ruling...

I have received quite a few calls about the latest 'homeschool' ruling out of California. Focus on the Family is airing a special program today (Friday).
Join the daily broadcast of Focus on the Family tonight at 9pm on WBFJ.
http://www.family.org/

Here is the scoop...
A state appeals court has decided that California parents without teaching credentials do not have a right to home-school their children. The 2nd District Court of Appeals ruling could affect up to 200,000 home-schooled students in California. The latest California ruling didn't start out as a validation of homeschooling. It actually arose from a child welfare dispute between Los Angeles County and Philip and Mary Long (of Lynwood), who have been homeschooling their eight children. The mom, Mary Long is their teacher, but holds no teaching credential. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/03/07/MNJDVF0F1.DTL

Parents, imagine being told that it is illegal for you to home school your children. That nightmare is now a reality in California, and today's guests say it could soon become a reality nationwide.

TODAY'S BROADCAST (Airing nationwide on Friday, March 07, 2008) In Defense of Home Schooling - Panel. A California state appellate court ruled last week that it is illegal for parents in the Golden State to home school their children without the appropriate state teaching credentials. If this ruling stands, home-schooling parents could, in effect, become guilty of a criminal offense. Tune in today to find out how you can oppose this chilling decision, which Dr. Dobson calls "an unprecedented assault" on parental rights - one that could have nationwide consequences. Joining Dr. Dobson are public policy expert Carrie Gordon Earll, Michael Farris of the Home School Legal Defense Association and Roy Hanson of Family Protection Ministries. You'll also hear from a California home-schooling mom whose right to make educational decisions for her children is now under attack.

Researchers have uncovered a rare photograph of a young Helen Keller with her teacher Anne Sullivan, nearly 120 years after it was taken on Cape Cod. The photograph, shot in July 1888 in Brewster, Mass. shows an 8-year-old Helen sitting outside in a light-colored dress, holding Sullivan's hand and cradling one of her beloved dolls. Experts on Keller's life believe it could be the earliest photo of the two women together and the only one showing the blind and deaf child with a doll -- the first word Keller spelled for Sullivan after they met in 1887. For more than a century, though, the photograph was hidden in a family photo album.

The robber of a convenience store in Des Moines, Iowa left behind a ‘taxing’ clue…a W-2 form. A man robbed a Git-N-Go store in Des Moines last Friday after telling a clerk he had a gun. He left the store with about $115 in cash…but had shed his hat and jacket during the robbery. When police responded, they found the W-2 tax form in his coat pocket. Officers checked the name on the form and found a listing for a 25-year-old with a suspended driver's license who is on probation for theft. The man's description matched information provided by the clerk.

Sometimes a penny for your thoughts isn't a good thing. Readington Township school officials in New Jersey gave 29 students detention after they used pennies to pay for their $2 dollar lunches. Superintendent Jorden Schiff says it started out as a prank. But as the eighth-graders began to get in trouble for taking up so much time, it turned into a protest about Thursday's shortened lunch period. Schiff said the students were punished for holding up their peers and disrespecting lunch aides. Schiff said some parents think a two-day detention went too far and others think it wasn't enough. The school said it wants students to know they can express themselves without disrupting other people.

Alexander Graham Bell was born on this date in 1847. One of Bell’s greatest inventions was the telephone which he was awarded a patent in 1876. Both his mother and wife were deaf, profoundly influencing his life's work with sound and hearing devices. In 1888, Alexander Graham Bell was one of the founding members of the National Geographic Society.
How ironic…Bell considered his most famous invention (the telephone) an intrusion and refused to have a telephone in his study. When Bell passed away…all telephones in the US were silent for a minute. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Graham_Bell
