A state appeals court has decided that California parents without teaching credentials do not have a right to home-school their children. The 2nd District Court of Appeals ruling could affect up to 200,000 home-schooled students in California. The latest California ruling didn't start out as a validation of homeschooling. It actually arose from a child welfare dispute between Los Angeles County and Philip and Mary Long (of Lynwood), who have been homeschooling their eight children. The mom, Mary Long is their teacher, but holds no teaching credential.
The Home School Legal Defense Association saying that California is set to become the only state in the nation to deny the vast majority of home schooling parents their fundamental right to teach their children at home.
Focus on the Family has a full report regarding this ruling during the daily broadcast at 9pm tonight on WBFJ. www.citizenlink.org/CLtopstories/A000006717.cfm

Watch the 'Birdie'?
An animal rights group wants the PGA Tour to take action against player Tripp Isenhour, facing charges for hitting a hawk with a golf ball because it was making noise as he videotaped a TV show. Isenhour was charged this week with cruelty to animals and killing a migratory bird, misdemeanors that carry a maximum penalty of 14 months in jail and $1,500 dollars in fines.
The hawk moved closer, and the golfer hit several balls at the hawk. The 39-year-old player (originally from Salisbury) became angry while filming ``Shoot Like A Pro'' in December at the Grand Cypress Golf Club in Florida when a squawking red-shouldered hawk forced another take.
