According to AAA, gas prices across the country have fallen more than four cents in the past 24 hours. The national average for regular unleaded: $3.40. But...the average in North Carolina: $3.76 Expect higher prices and spotty gas shortages through the end of the year.

More than 10,000 children in China remained hospitalized after drinking milk contaminated with the industrial chemical melamine. Eight of the children are listed in serious condition. The scandal has so far been blamed for the deaths of four babies. Melamine contamination can lead to kidney stones and possibly life-threatening kidney failure.

The National Debt Clock in New York City has literally run out of digits. As a short-term fix, the digital dollar sign on the billboard-style clock near Times Square in New York City has been switched to the "1" in $10 trillion. It's marking the federal government's current debt at about $10.2 trillion. BTW: The late Manhattan real estate developer Seymour Durst put the sign up in 1989 to call attention to what was then a $2.7 trillion dollar debt.
