Breaking News: The global financial crisis escalated today with stock markets overseas taking a major hit. The Federal Reserve has cut a key interest rate by half a point to 1.5 %. Central banks around the world have cut key interest rates by half a percentage point. Investors in Japan suffered one of their worst days ever. Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina has a new Executive Director. Clyde Fitzgerald, Jr is a former senior executive with R.J.R. and has been closely associated with Second Harvest since its founding in 1982. Fitzgerald replaces Nan Griswold, who recently stepped down after 26 years as the Director of SHFB.
Proceeds from Pinball Plinko at the WBFJ Gazebo at the Dixie Classic Fair will go to help assist the hungry through Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC.

A FORMER DEFENSE DEPARTMENT CONTRACTOR HAS PLEADED GUILTY TO STEALING MILLIONS OF GALLONS OF FUEL FROM THE U.S. ARMY IN IRAQ. The Justice Department saying that the 32-year old man faces a maximum penalty of ten years in prison and a 250-thousand dollar fine. The stolen fuel was worth about 40-million dollars.

A LAWSUIT HAS BEEN FILED TO CHALLENGE THE NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER. The suit filed by the Freedom From Religion Foundation challenges the federal law that designates the annual observation…claiming that the law violates the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. It names President Bush, his press secretary, the Governor of Wisconsin, and Shirley Dobson, the chair of the National Day of Prayer Task Force. In 1952 Congress passed a resolution calling for an annual, national day of prayer. In 1988, Congress permanently set the first Thursday of every May as the National Day of Prayer.
