Churches with a high number of small groups, effective lay leadership, faithful pastors, and both traditional and contemporary services tend to be the healthiest. According to surveys conducted by an independent firm, the United Methodist Church is seeking to reverse its declining membership. Findings from the newly released report, "The Vital Congregations Research Project," revealed that the main ‘drivers of vitality’ were consistent regardless of church size, predominant ethnicity and geographic location.

Tuition costs are going up at all 16 public university campuses in the state. Under a plan approved by the UNC Board of Governors, students on average will pay nearly $500 dollars more in tuition this Fall. Students at UNC-Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University will pay $750 dollars more in tuition, the maximum allowed. Novant Health plans to eliminate 48 jobs in Winston-Salem over the next few days. According to a memo sent to employees, most of the job cuts will be from Forsyth Medical Center and one from Medical Park Hospital. A GROUP OF AMERICAN MISSIONARIES WAS REPORTEDLY AMONG THOSE INJURED IN THE TEROR BOMBINGS IN UGANDA ON SUNDAY. According to The Christian Post, members of Christ Community United Methodist Church in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania posted on their Uganda Mission blog that five of the six-member mission sustained serious injuries that would require surgery. The number of fatalities has risen to 76.

City residents in Winston-Salem have been given the ‘green light’ to trap coyotes on their property starting this Fall. The issue of coyotes within the city limits of Winston-Salem came to light last year when officials at the Children's Home on Reynolda Road reported coyotes killing calves and other animals on the home's farm. A federal appeals court has throw out the FCC's rules on indecent speech that could lead to a new Supreme Court test of the government's power to control what is said on television and radio.
A three-judge panel of the Second U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York said the Federal Communications Commission's indecency policies violate the First Amendment. Government officials have insisted that BP’s new oil containment cap needs further testing before the latest oil containment can proceed.
