RECALL: Perdue Farms has issued a recall on some 91,000 pounds of frozen chicken nuggets after consumer complaints of small pieces of blue plastic were found in the Perdue nuggets.
The recall is on Perdue’s “GREAT VALUE Fully Cooked Chicken Nuggets” found at Wal-Mart stores. Each bag bears the establishment number “P-33944” with a “BEST IF USED BY” date of June 9, 2011. www.bizjournals.com/triad/stories/2010/07/19/daily11.html

Sign of the economic times: Joyce Brothers, a 101-year-old company that supplies food and non-food items to local restaurants is closing for good. At its peak, Joyce Brothers employed 60 people. 30 workers were laid off back in May. The company opened in 1909 at the corner of 5th Street and Main. Joyce Brothers moved to its current location on Stratford Road in 1969.

ABOUT 30 PEOPLE WERE INJURED YESTERDAY, ONE SERIOUSLY, WHEN A UNITED AIRLINES PASSENGER PLANE EXPERIENCED SEVERE TURBULENCE. The flight from Washington, D-C. to Los Angeles flight was diverted to Denver International Airport. One passenger was seriously injured and most other passengers suffered bruises, whip-lash injuries and sprains.

THE SENATE HAS BROKEN A MONTHS-LONG STALEMATE OVER A PLAN TO RESTORE EMERGENCY JOBLESS BENEFITS. The money would go to millions of people who have been out of work for more than six months. A final vote is expected today in the Senate. The measure then goes back to the House, where leaders expect to quickly approve it and send it to the President by the end of the week.

THE NATION'S LARGEST ADOPTION AGENCY HAS ANNOUNCED THAT IT HAD THE HIGHEST-EVER INCREASE IN ADOPTION PLACEMENTS IN THE FIRST HALF OF THIS YEAR. Bethany Christian Services reports that the combined international and domestic adoption placement increased 26%. The Senate Judiciary Committee has endorsed Elena Kagan’s nomination to the Supreme Court. A vote in the Senate is expected by the end of the month. Conservative leaders cite Kagan’s lack of judicial experience and her record on limiting military recruiters' access to Harvard Law School while dean as reasons NOT to support her confirmations.
