According to the North Carolina Drought Monitor, 21 counties including Forsyth, Davidson and Stokes counties are listed as ‘abnormally dry’ because of lack of rain. The central counties toward Raleigh are listed in the moderate drought category while the eastern and coastal counties of the state are in a severe drought. www.ncdrought.org/index.php

Governor Perdue has declared a state of emergency for 29 eastern North Carolina counties because of dry conditions and raging wildfires.  The declaration will enable the state to seek aid from the federal government and other states in fighting the blazes.  Lightning strikes have been blamed for some of the coastal wildfires. www.wxii12.com/news/28356458/detail.html#ixzz1QTWVx7Ul

So, just how ‘friendly’ IS Mt Airy???  Well, Mt Airy is one of six towns in the running for ‘Friendliest Town’…a contest by Rand –McNally and USA Today. The winner will be announced on July 21.


Police in Raleigh have charged the teenage driver in that fatal crash Saturday afternoon that killed a Trinity girl and sent two of her family members to the hospital.  19 year old Marcus Bridges has been charged with felony hit and run and unsafe lane change in the accident. A mother and her two daughters traveling in a separate vehicle had to swerve to avoid Bridges vehicle, crossing two lanes of traffic before hitting a tree.  All three in the McKenzie family were taken to the hospital. 17 year old Morgan McKenzie from Trinity (a passenger in the car) died as a result of her injuries at the hospital. The only authenticated photograph of infamous Wild West gunslinger Billy the Kid was auctioned off to a Florida billionaire over the weekend for $2.3 million dollars. William Koch, an energy company executive and well-known collector of American West artifacts, plans to allow some small museums to display the piece, and after that he will "just enjoy" the iconic piece. FYI: The metallic photo of Billy the Kid was taken in New Mexico around 1880.

NEW YORK HAS BECOME THE SIXTH STATE TO LEGALIZE SAME-SEX MARRIAGE OVER THE WEEKEND. Four Republicans crossed party lines in the New York state senate and voted in favor of the bill on Friday night. That means same-gender couples in New York can legally begin marrying in 30 days.


MICHELE BACHMANN PLANS TO ANNOUNCE HER BID FOR THE REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATION TODAY. The Minnesota congresswoman plans to make that announcement from her childhood home of Waterloo, Iowa.
