Election Day 2006
Polls are open til 7:30pm this evening.
What to expect as you head to the polls today…
- All 170 state House and Senate seats are up for election…even though many are running unopposed.
- There are several hotly-contested sheriff races in the Piedmont.

In Forsyth County:
-Voters will use the new ‘voting machines’
- A $250 million dollar bond proposal for improvements in the Winston-Salem Forsyth County school system.
-Also, a $25 million dollar bond proposal for improvements for Forsyth Tech will be on the Ballot.

Voters in Greensboro will decided on eleven separate bond issues.
Including fire stations, public building renovations, renovation of the War Memorial auditorium, renovation of the War Memorial baseball stadium, neighborhood development, parks and recreation items, a new swimming center, a international civil rights center and museum, and a project for the libraries and the historical museum. If all the bonds are passed at the same time, it would mean an annual increase of $30 for a family who owns a $100,000 house,

Nationwide:
-Eight states considering constitutional amendments to protect traditional marriage. Colorado, Arizona, Wisconsin, Idaho, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Virginia.

Campaigning from beyond the grave?
A slick campaign mailer shows a smiling Texas state representative and reminds voters of her achievements in education, economics and politics.
But it fails to mention that she is no longer with the residents of Texas.
Republican Glenda Dawson passed away in September…but her campaign continues. Campaign officials hope she will win re-election for a two-year term over her Democratic challenger.
If she wins, Texas Governor Rick Perry would call a special election to fill the vacancy in the heavily Republican district near Houston.
The man overseeing her campaign said the new flier was prepared as a "tribute" to Dawson…

Could watching R-rated movies influence pre-teens and unhealthy behavior? One study published in the November issue of Pediatrics, shows that 9-to-12 year olds who were barred from watching R-rated movies also had lower risks for smoking and drinking.

Are you on a diet? Did you check with your doctor, first?
A nationwide survey from the University of Connecticut saying that 70% of Americans who are trying to shed some pounds are using their own diet plans and feel they don't need a doctor's guidance.

Students who ‘have to go’ at one high school in our state…need more than a hall pass to use the restroom. They must take a school administrator with them.
Officials at West Brunswick High in Shallotte are requiring students to have an escort to use the restroom.Principal Jim Jordan says he's concerned about student safety after a string of false fire alarms and three trash can fires.But the students complain they're being treated like pre-schoolers. Principal Jordan at West Brunswick saying that he is teaching a life lesson, even if everyone pays for the transgressions of a few.
