Big win for Big Tobacco yesterday: The Supreme Court has overturned a $79.5 million dollar punitive damages award won by the widow of a longtime smoker against Philip Morris.-By a 5-4 vote, the high court ruled the huge damages award was unconstitutional because it was intended to punish the tobacco company for harming not just the plaintiff but other smokers as well.-Legal experts said the ruling could have a big impact on other types of product liability cases, such as lawsuits against drug companies and automakers.

State lawmakers are considering a new rating system for adult care facilities. Sadness not depression at the death of a loved one is the finding of a study from Yale University School of Medicine. It was commonly thought that the reaction to the death of a loved one from natural causes depression. Research now shows that loved ones are sad and they miss the deceased person. Experts also suggest that prolonged sadness could lead to depression.
The study confirmed that most people grieve in a sequence that was popularized by Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross in the 1960’s –including disbelief, yearning, anger, depression and acceptance.
