THE NUMBER OF FATALITIES HAS RISEN TO OVER
The number of fatalities has risen to over 700 after an 8.8 magnitude earthquake hit Chile on Saturday. Rescue workers have braved aftershocks as strong as 6.9 on the Richter scale to search for survivors. Voice of America reports that dozens of nations and international aid groups have mobilized to provide aid to Chile. Schools have been opened as shelters to house hundreds of homeless. Police have used tear gas to enforce an overnight curfew to control looters who have sacked virtually every market in Chile's hardest-hit city. Saturday's quake was the country's strongest since 1960, when a 9.5 magnitude quake hit Chile. (Fox News)

THE NCAA DUMPS FOCUS ON THE FAMILY'S BANNER AD ON ITS WEBSITE. The ad which features a father wanting the best for his son is part of Focus on the Family’s "Celebrate Family - Celebrate Life" campaign. That ad was pulled without any notice. The Christian Post reports that the governing body of college sports decided to pull the ad after receiving complaints, including from some of its members, that Focus on the Family’s stance against same-sex relationships are in conflict with the NCAA’s policy on sexual orientation. www.focusonthefamily.com

The pro life film ‘Sarah’s Choice’ starring Christian singer Rebecca St. James made its TV debut over the weekend. St. James portrays a young single career woman facing an unplanned pregnancy. The film delves into her decision over whether to keep the baby or have an abortion. Rebecca St James, who has long been vocal about her pro-life and abstinence until marriage stance, says many woman have opted to keep their babies after seeing the film. Petra Diamonds in London has sold a 507-carat diamond for $35.3 million dollars, breaking a record as the highest price ever paid for a rough diamond. Analysts had estimated the value of the stone, one of the 20 biggest high-quality rough diamonds, at around $25 million.
The gem was found last September at the Cullinan mine in South Africa. The Cullinan mine has been the source of many large diamonds, including the world's largest rough diamond -- the Cullinan -- at 3,106 carats. That gem was cut into the Star of Africa stones that are now set in Britain's Crown Jewels.
