Tomas was upgraded to a hurricane again in the overnight…heavy winds have already arrived on Haiti’s coast. The storm, packing sustained winds of 80 mph, and gusting up to 100…is on track to pass right between the eastern side of Cuba and the western side of Haiti. The death toll from the storm is already up to 12 after it lashed its way through the West Indies. It’s a good weekend to get that new energy efficient appliance you’ve had your eye on. For the third year, North Carolina is cutting you a break on sales tax for purchases of energy star qualified appliances like washers, refrigerators and heating and air products. But it’s not just a break on major purchases; also on smaller purchases like ceiling fans, dehumidifiers and programmable thermostats. (FOX8)

Finally some word from the biological mother of little Zahra Baker, the 10 year old Hickory girl missing and presumed dead. The mother, Emily Deitrich of Australia says she suffered postpartum depression after Zahra was born, and she signed over full custody to the girl’s father. She tried for years to find them later, but she says Adam Baker always stayed a step ahead of her efforts. Zahra was reported missing just three days after Deitrich discovered they were living here in the States. The North Carolina medical examiner is studying a bone they think is related to Zahra’s case. From the Winston-Salem Journal this morning…You’ve heard God’s love described as having “joy like a river,” but it’s not so joyful when the river is actual water running through the church! The State DOT is taking the blame for a mistake in a road construction project that caused 20 thousand dollars worth of flood damage to The Church, The Body of Christ in Pilot Mountain. The DOT has apologized for the mishap and promised to make it right. In the meantime, the folks at church are taking it in stride. They’re meeting in a tent outside, and their sign says The flood didn’t stop Noah, and it’s not going to stop us!

A Salvation Army Captain in Jackson Mississippi has gotten a serious jumpstart on the holiday bell ringing season…and he’ll be recorded in history for it! Captain Ken Chapman wanted to reach people to volunteer for bell ringing duty this holiday season. He rang his bell continuously for 30 hours, five minutes, 50 seconds. Guiness world record officials in London will have to declare it formally, but his efforts will most certainly pass the previous record of 28 hours, 50 minutes. Chapman said his arms hurt…duh…but he hopes it did inspire people to take up the bell for the 36 days of the holiday season that the Army rings the bell to raise money for its great programs.
