New research showing that people reading text messages or browsing the Internet on their smartphones tend to hold the devices closer than they would a book or newspaper, forcing their eyes to work harder than usual…resulting in dry eyes, eye discomfort and even blurred vision after prolonged use. Previous studies have also found that up to 90 percent of people who use computers experience eye problems. The study appears in the July issue of Optometry and Vision Science.

A man in a wheelchair was struck and killed by a drunk driver on the east side of Winston-Salem on Saturday evening. Vernon Thompson or "Babe" was struck near the corner of 14th Street and Patterson Avenue, while heading home from a local grocery store. There is no sidewalk on the short stretch of 14th Street that Thompson traveled daily. He was 57 years old.

Popular R and B singer Amy Winehouse passed away on Saturday. The cause of her death is not yet known pending an autopsy. Winehouse battled drug and alcohol addiction. FYI: Winehouse was 27 years old…the same age that several other rock icon performers passed away including Jimi Hendricks, Jim Morrison and Janice Joplin (even Curt Cobain).
The man who authorities say confessed to Norway's twin terror attacks on Friday made his first court appearance (away from the news media and cameras). Anders Breivik says that he staged the Oslo bombing and youth camp rampage as "marketing" for his manifesto calling for a revolution that would rid Europe of Muslims. The Norwegian government observed a national moment of silence, to remember those killed and wounded in Friday’s attacks.

Four students were attack by a bear in the Alaskan wilderness over the weekend. The students were participating in a National Outdoor Leadership School hike when they were attacked. The rest of the group, ten students and three instructors, has been evacuated from the area as a safety precaution.
