Mortgage rates fall below 5% in U.S. and N.C...The average interest rate for a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage fell below 5% last week, prompting many homeowners to investigate refinancing options, according to http://www.zillow.com/. For the week ended Jan. 11, the average 30-year rate in the US was 4.92%, down from 5.10% the week before. North Carolina had an almost identical drop, to 4.92% from 5.09%.

With an artic cold front approaching the Triad by the end of the week, two more churches in Greensboro have opened temporary emergency shelters this week to help the homeless. All part of the new Winter Emergency ( or WE) shelter program through Greensboro Urban Ministry that was established to help shelter 60 to 100 more homeless people this winter.
Mt. Zion Baptist Church on Alamance Church Road opened its shelter Monday night and West Market Street United Methodist Church will open on Thursday.

Mike Weaver, the lead singer of the group Big Daddy Weave is resolving to be physically ‘less of a man’ this year. Big Mike wants to lose 90 pounds this year. The effort is called the "90 In 09 Challenge". Mike Weaver weighed in at 363 pounds around Christmas time.
