Update: THE U.S.-FLAGGED CARGO SHIP MAERSK ALABAMA WAS ATTACKED AGAIN TODAY. In April, the Danish-owned ship was attacked in the Indian Ocean. However, this time, CNN reports the container ship fended off the attack by firing back, according to the European Union's anti-piracy force. The EU naval force says pirates fired automatic weapons at the ship as it sailed about 350 nautical miles east of Somalia. According to the U.S. Navy, private security guards aboard the ship fired back and used loud sounds to repel the attack and no casualties were reported. www.cnn.com
An emotional Daniel Clark spoke to the media for the first time yesterday about the shooting last month near the Bojangles on Peters Creek Parkway in Winston-Salem. Clark stated that "I would like to thank God, because I am only here by his grace. Everything I know happens for a reason.” Clark survived a gunshot wound to his neck and fired the shots that killed 35-year-old Monte Evans. Police said Evans shot Clark's partner, Sgt. Mickey Hutchens, outside the Bojangles' restaurant on Peters Creek Parkway on Oct. 7. Clark underwent surgery last Friday to remove the bullet that was lodged in the left side of his neck. Clark plans to return to the force soon. **Winston-Salem Police Chief Scott Cunningham said the internal investigation into the incident could be completed as early as next week.

The Greensboro City Council voted last night to fund a $6 million dollar shortfall for the Greensboro Aquatic Center with hotel tax money. After nearly 20 years at the job, Forsyth County District Attorney Tom Keith said yesterday that he is retiring to spend more time with family and focus on other projects. His last day will be November 30th. Gov. Perdue will appoint Assistant District Attorney Jim O'Neill, 43, who has served under Keith since 1997, to fill the rest of Keith's term.

West Virginia Sen. Robert Byrd has become the longest-serving lawmaker in congressional history, a milestone to be marked with a Senate resolution later today. On Tuesday, Senator Byrd's service tied the record set by Carl Hayden, D-Ariz., who served in the House (then the Senate) from 1912 to 1969. "I look forward to serving you for the next 56 years and 320 days," Byrd said in a statement marking the occasion. His only regret, Byrd said, was that his late wife, Erma, was not there with him. Despite fragile health that has kept him from the Senate floor during much of this year, has a nearly 98% attendance record over the course of his career.
