Samaritan Ministries will celebrate its 30th anniversary on Wednesday (March 2) with a special worship service at noon at First Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem. A FREE soup lunch will be available 30 minutes before and after the service. River Birch Lodge is donating the soup.  A ‘Love offering’ will be taken. It is Severe Weather Awareness Week in North Carolina. A statewide tornado drill is planned for Wednesday morning.

A taste of ‘severe weather’ late yesterday afternoon around the Piedmont Triad. Strong winds, heavy amounts of rain and yes hail in some areas. Fox 8 reporting that residents in Lexington, Thomasville and Tyro were pelted with a hail storm saying that it looked like it had ‘snowed’ at their homes.  PRAISE: There were no reports of injuries during yesterday’s severe storms.

A group of 23 state Senators in Raleigh is hoping to give voters in North Carolina the opportunity to vote on ‘Traditional marriage’’  The proposed amendment to the state constitutional SB 106—Defense of Marriage - if passed will likely be placed on the ballot in 2012. The proposal was introduced by Conservative Republicans last week. North Carolina is the only state in the southeast that has NOT approved a ‘Traditional Marriage’ amendment. A BILL gaining popularity in Raleigh would give local school districts more ‘flexibility’ over the school calendar and allow mid-term exams to be given before Christmas. The Winston-Salem Journal reporting that the title of the bill “Putting Kids First” is sponsored by Representative Dale Folwell of Forsyth County.


The White House has ordered US air and naval forces in the Mediterranean toward Libya…as International pressure builds against Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi to step down.


Actress and pinup model Jane Russell passed away yesterday. She was 89. The actress gained fame after appearing in the 1943 film The Outlaw and likely best known for her role in the 1953 movie with Marilyn Monroe ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’. New students attending UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke this fall could have some summer reading if they choose. “Eating Animals’ a book reviewing the food industry has been chosen by the two schools…the first time that a committee from both Duke and Carolina decided to consolidate their book choices. FYI: Students are asked to read the selected book during the summer and participate in small group discussions at the start of the fall semester.
