Governor Easley is requesting that residents in 4 western North Carolina counties (including Ashe, Watauga and Caldwell counties) to step up water conservation after being added to the severe drought list. Currently, 21 western counties in our state are in either an extreme or severe drought situation.
Easley recommends the following simple steps that all North Carolinians can use to conserve during this drought:
-Take shorter showers.
-Water lawns and gardens early in the morning or late in the evening, not in the heat of midday, to prevent evaporation.
-Do not leave water running while rinsing dishes, shaving or brushing teeth.
Thursday's update from the U.S. Drought Monitor reports 57 of North Carolina's 100 counties are experiencing either moderate, severe or extreme drought, down from 83 counties last week.

Breakfast giant Kellogg’s has agreed to improve the nutritional content of the cereals and snacks it markets to children. In order to avoid a legal battle, Kellogg said it will not market foods in TV, radio, print or Web site ads to audiences that include at least 50% of kids age 12 and under. The world's largest cereal maker was facing a lawsuit by American parents and nutrition advocacy groups concerned about increasing rates of child obesity in the US. (Webmd)

Natalie Meilinger (an elementary school science teacher near Chicago) has picked up something out-of-this-world on her baby video monitor since Sunday. One of the two channels on Natalie’s baby video monitor has been picking up black-and-white video from inside the space shuttle Atlantis. The other still lets her keep an eye on her baby.Live video of the mission is available on NASA's Web site, so it's possible the monitor is picking up a signal from somewhere."It's not coming straight from the shuttle," says a NASA spokesperson.
Meilinger silenced disbelieving co-workers by bringing in a video of the monitor to show her class on Tuesday, her students' last day of school. At home, 3-month-old Jack and 2-year-old Rachel don't quite understand what their parents are watching.‘Summer Infant’ the monitor's manufacturer, is investigating what could be causing the transmission.

The crew aboard the space shuttle Atlantis is planning a space walk to repair a damaged thermal blanket later today. Engineers aren't sure why computers on board the International Space Station have failed.
NASA expects the problem to be fixed in the next couple of days. (USA Radio News)
