Chinese authorities have shut down 180 food factories, after inspectors found industrial chemicals in products from candy to seafood. Authorities say formaldehyde, illegal dyes and industrial wax were used to make candy, pickles, crackers and seafood. And they discovered some factories churning out products that used recycled or expired food.
High levels of toxins were discovered in Chinese exports this year including pet food and toothpaste. (NY Times/WFMY)
The New York Times saying that about 900,000 tubes of Chinese made toothpaste containing an ingredient in anti-freeze were distributed to hospitals for the mentally ill, prisons, juvenile detention centers and some hospitals serving the general population. (USA Today)

Leslie Dunn, the former principal of Bessemer Elementary School
in Guilford County, passed away while attending a principal's conference this week in Asheville. Dunn was slated to be the principal of Pearce Elementary School. The governors of California and Nevada taking a tour of charred neighborhoods devastated by wild fires near Lake Tahoe. Fire crews get a break on Wednesday. The fire has destroyed 200 homes and other buildings since it emerged over the weekend.

Storms in the Lone Star State have dumped up to 18 inches of rain on parts of central Texas, flooding several towns and leaving dozens of people stranded on rooftops, cars and in trees. (USA Radio News)Severe thunderstorms that rolled through the Piedmont around suppertime yesterday left some areas of Greensboro under water…-At the Greensboro Coliseum, the heavy rain pooled and stalled a car in the parking lot. -Heavy rain flooded out one lane of Lee Street. -Areas to the south and east of downtown Greensboro were hit the hardest. To settle the debt: One pound of barbecue from the Barbecue Center of Lexington, one bottle of barbecue sauce and one pint of slaw from Wilber's Barbecue of Goldsboro and a case of Cheerwine has been sent to Oregon.

The most eagerly awaited cell phone ever marketed to the masses will be sold Friday…The Apple iPhone. The iPhone does e-mail, Web browsing, music and videos. It comes in two models - $499 for a 4-gigabyte version and $599 for 8 gigabytes of memory - and requires a two-year contract with AT&T Inc. Hype aside, the iPhone is a radical design, a sliver of a device with a 3.5-inch glass screen and very few buttons. The exception: iPhone owners can't buy or download music over their phones.
