WBFJ Morning News Update

A celebration service will be at 4pm this afternoon at Bethesda United Methodist Church for Christopher Madren who was killed in a single car accident early Saturday Morning. Madren was a rising senior at North Davidson High School and a member of the Welcome Fire Department. Memorials can be made to the Welcome Fire Department.

A Piedmont High School student faces charges on the first day of the school year. A school resource office at R.J. Reynolds High School spotted a BB gun and paintball gun in a student’s car. A court date has been set on September 25.

A suspected copper thief remains in critical condition. Winston-Salem police found Joseph Stewart hanging from a wire early Sunday morning at the Duke Energy substation just off Main Street. Officers think Stewart was trying to steal copper wiring and got shocked.

The Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick pleaded guilty (Monday) to federal charges stemming from a dog-fighting ring. After leaving the courthouse, Vick apologized for his actions. Sentencing for Vick is set for December 10th.

New Life Church in Colorado Springs has a new pastor to succeed Ted Haggard. Reverend Brady Boyd was voted in by the congregation. Ted Haggard stepped down as pastor of the mega church last November after admitting to immoral behavior.

The worst flooding in years has hit India. Record monsoons have driven 28 million people from their homes…and have claimed more than 2,000 lives. Missionaries with Gospel for Asia are on the scene providing rice and beans, cooking utensils, kerosene, and other items to flood victims.

Ohio joins Wisconsin, Oklahoma, and Minnesota as the latest Midwestern state to be declared a Federal Disaster Area by President Bush. Thousands of homes and businesses were damaged or destroyed by heavy rains that led to massive flooding last week.

Greek authorities have arrested 8 people in connection with wildfires that are burning in the country of Greece. The fires have claimed at least 63 lives…with thousands of other people left homeless. Thousands of acres of land and property have been destroyed.

Skip the biscuits and gravy. Just say no to the fried pickles. According to a new study, residents in Mississippi are the fattest in the nation.Mississippi is the first state in the US to crack the 30% barrier for adults considered obese…with West Virginia and Alabama just behind.
Poverty and obesity often go hand in hand, doctors say, because poor families stretch their budgets by buying cheaper, processed foods that have higher fat content and lower nutritional value. The leanest state is Colorado. North Carolina came in at #17.
