Thousands walking across the State (including the Triad) yesterday to raise awareness about hunger, both locally and globally. In Forsyth County, three CROP Walks raised money for Crisis Control Ministry, Sunnyside Ministry of the Moravian Church and Church World Service.
Last year’s CROP Walk in Forsyth County raised close to $80,000 dollars. FYI: Teeny Paxton is a born walker. At 85, she walks about 10 miles a week in her neighborhood near Robinhood Road, at Hanes Mall. Every October since 1979, Teeny has taken part in area CROP Walks.

One of the recession’s greatest victims has been commercial real estate. Industry rumors and reports suggest that at least two of the three most prominent local Home Furnishing showroom complexes in High Point— The International Home Furnishings Center, Market Square and Showplace — could be on the ‘market’ soon. Rumor has it that an investor might want to buy all three and consolidate the properties. Showplace, a 1-million-square-foot building, defaulted on loans a year ago. World Market Center in Las Vegas is in a struggle of its own. The 10 year old Vegas market has not attracted the kind of national business its owners had hoped for. The World Market Center is reported to be struggling to make payments on $560 million in loans. ($214 million, was 60 days past due as of September). FYI: The High Point ‘FALL’ Home Furnishings Market in runs thru Thursday.
