The Supreme Court will consider how FREE…free speech actually is when it comes to privacy at military funerals. The High Court is hearing arguments today in the dispute between the father of a Marine killed in Iraq (Albert Snyder) and members of the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas. The outspoken church pickets many military funerals to make their point that U.S. military deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq are punishment for Americans' immorality…including tolerance of homosexuality and abortion. http://apnews.myway.com/article/20101006/D9IM5F9O2.html

State law restricting the use of spanking won't go into effect until 2011, but Thomasville and Randolph County schools are thinking of making some rule changes. The change mostly affects students with disabilities. Starting in 2011, school administrators must get written permission from parents at the beginning of the school year to use corporal punishment such as spanking.

Persistent, loud noise on the job more than doubles the risk for heart disease in younger workers…especially men. According to Canadian researchers at the University of British Columbia, ‘noise’ was defined as industrial noise, such as noise in mining, lumbering and wood product manufacturing. Persistent loud noise does not mean loud music or talking. No more noisy SunChip bags? Frito-Lay is switching out the bio-degradable bags for the original plastic bags. The original plain flavor of SunChips will keep the louder bags.
The snack maker said the switch should be complete by the end of October.

Fire crews on the scene yesterday afternoon at Rick’s Smokehouse Barbecue Restaurant on Old Highway 52 in Welcome. Witnesses reported seeing smoke billowing from the restaurant yesterday afternoon.
