Today is a state and Federal holiday celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.   Local, State and Federal offices will be closed today.  No school for most public schools today.

Dr. Alveda King, full-time Director of African American Outreach for Priests for Life and niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., said today that advice columns written by her uncle for Ebony magazine in 1957-58 reveal a man who today would be regarded as a ‘social conservative’. "In advising men and women on questions of personal behavior 50 years ago, Uncle Martin sounded no different than a conservative Christian preacher does now," said Dr. King. "He was pro-life, pro-abstinence before marriage…and based his views…on the unchanging Word of the Bible. Proposed cuts to the Winston-Salem / Forsyth County school system’s budget could eliminate hundreds of jobs. The Winston-Salem Journal reported on Saturday that Superintendent Don Martin presented scenarios to the school board’s finance committee on Friday, in response to the Governor’s request for additional cuts in next year’s state budget.


The Children's Home in Winston-Salem is expanding. The "Opportunity House" is opening its doors to offer aid to abused and neglected children…while adding 45 new jobs to the community. CONGRESSWOMAN GABRIELLE GIFFORDS HAS BEEN UPGRADED FROM CRITICAL TO SERIOUS CONDITION. Giffords has been removed from a ventilator and is now breathing on her own. 13 people were wounded, six people lost their lives, in the deadly shooting spree in Tucson a week ago. The suspected gunman is in custody.

‘THE SOCIAL NETWORK’, A FILM ABOUT FACEBOOK, TOOK THE TOP PRIZE AT THE GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS LAST NIGHT…FOR THE ‘BEST MOVIE DRAMA’.  ‘Glee’ won the Golden Globe for best comedy or musical series.


ONE OF THE ASTRONAUTS SCHEDULED TO GO UP ON THE NEXT SHUTTLE MISSION HAS BEEN INJURED IN A BICYCLE ACCIDENT.  NASA says although astronaut commander Tim Kopra will be OK, though his injuries could impact his duties aboard Space Shuttle Discovery.  Discovery is scheduled to launch on February 24th.
