Back to school for everyone in our listening area, except for Grayson County schools in Virginia which are closed today.

The holiday break for students in Alleghany County has extended deep into January. Thanks to several winter storms, students haven't been in school since December 23 in Alleghany County which borders Wilkes and Surry counties. So far, students in Alleghany County have missed 13 days this school year.  Last year, students in Grayson County, Va., were out of school for more than 20 days during February.  Students in Alleghany, and many other mountain counties, start school in early-August, a full two weeks before many Triad school systems. PTI officials may soon be asking passengers to pay for construction that was intended mainly to lure FedEx. A $4.50 passenger facility charge could go into effect as early as August if it is approved by the FAA.  (Fox 8)


President Obama will host a formal state dinner for Chinese President Hu Jintao later today. The Chinese delegation is on a three-day trip to the US for talks on trade, currency, North Korea and human rights. RnR

Members of the House of Representatives in DC will cast a final vote on a repeal of the healthcare bill enacted by Congress last March. However, President Obama has said he will veto the repeal if it reaches his desk.  RnR


Where’s Christmas and Easter? Jewish and Muslim holidays are noted on the new school calendar published by the European Union but Christian holidays such as Easter and Christmas have been left off. 27 European countries who are members of the EU will receive the calendars, which are handed out to schools. Officials with the European Union stated that the omission of the Christian holidays was an error…and will be included on future calendars.

A new name…but the same caring and compassionate services. ‘Lifeline Pregnancy Care Center of Mount Airy’ is now known as ‘The Legacy Center’. The Mount Airy location was started by Lifeline Pregnancy Center in Elkin as a satellite campus back in 2002. The Legacy Center is located at 154 N. Renfro Street (Suite 108) in Mt Airy. Random metal detector checks at one high school in LA didn’t prevent one student from carrying a handgun onto campus yesterday.  A 17-year-old boy arrested after the handgun in his backpack ‘accidentally’ went off…wounding two other high students.


Haiti's 'Baby Doc' dictator has been taken into custody. Charges were filed against the former Haitian dictator on Tuesday.


Sargent Shriver, who was responsible for launching the U.S. Peace Corps after marrying into the Kennedy family, passed away on Tuesday.  He was 95. His wife, Eunice Kennedy Shriver who started the Special Olympics, passed away in 2009.  FYI: The Shrivers had five children including Maria Shriver, the media personality and former first lady of California. Maria is married to Arnold Schwarzenegger.  (CNN)

Update: Two accidents involving tractor-trailers on SB Highway 52 caused major traffic tie-ups at two different times yesterday. The first accident occurred along 52 SB at Highway 66 around 8am yesterday morning. The driver of that truck was taken to the hospital and treated for non life-threatening injuries.
