Three people, including a Department of Motor Vehicles officer
in Winston-Salem, are in jail on charges of selling fake drivers licenses, birth certificates, passports, Social Security cards and illegal drugs to illegal immigrants in the Piedmont.
According to the DMV, Gee Holloman was based out of the Silas Creek Park office, but would often fill in at other branches and had been employeed with the department since 2003.

Crash at the Golden Arches in High Point:
Witnesses telling police that a car crashed its way through the parking lot of the McDonald’s on Eastchester Drive, in front of Oak Hollow Mall. Officers said the driver was not hurt, but drugs and alcohol was suspected.

Sidney Lowe, II (the son of NC State basketball coach Sidney Lowe) has been charged in connection with last weekend's dorm shooting at UNCG.
Police say Brian Patrick Martin entered Weil Hall and opened fire, shooting Raleigh freshman Stephen Cobb on Saturday.
Cobb remained in stable condition at Moses Cone Hospital.

In Manila: A busload of more than 30 preschool children and their teachers have been released after being held hostage for several hours by a man armed with guns and a grenade. Only seven states have cut-off entrance dates later than North Carolina.

San Francisco will be the first city in the US to ban plastic bags from large supermarkets to help promote recycling. Supermarkets and drugstores will not be allowed to offer plastic bags made from petroleum products starting in six months.

181 million plastic grocery bags a year.
-Experts say that the ban would save 450,000 gallons of oil a year and eliminate
1,400 tons of debris sent to land fills.

A 19-year-old has been arrested after shooting a UNCG Student.
The shooting happened Saturday afternoon just before 5 p.m. inside Weil Hall on the campus of UNCG. Witnesses say students subdued the shooter
Brian Martin until police arrived. Two arrests were made. Police are still looking for a third suspect. Brian Martin has been charged with numerous things…including Attempted First Degree Murder.

At a news conference yesterday in Chapel Hill, Democratic Presidential hopeful John Edwards and wife Elizabeth saying that they will move forward together…with life and with the campaign.
Elizabeth was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004. The cancer has returned…this time spreading to the bone.
Experts say that the cancer is considered not curable…but patients can live years in Elizabeth’s situation…each case is different.

A federal judge has blocked a law that would restrict online pornography…
striking down a 1998 U.S. law that makes it a crime for commercial Web site operators to let children access "harmful" material.

At a news conference yesterday in Chapel Hill, Democratic Presidential hopeful John Edwards and wife Elizabeth saying that they will move forward together…with life and with the campaign.
Elizabeth was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004. The cancer has returned…this time spreading to the bone.
Experts say that the cancer is considered not curable…but patients can live years in Elizabeth’s situation…each case is different.
FYI: John and Elizabeth have been married nearly 30 years and have 3 children.
A 4th child, Wade, died in a car accident in 1996.

A federal judge has blocked a law that would restrict online pornography…
striking down a 1998 U.S. law that makes it a crime for commercial Web site operators to let children access "harmful" material.
In the ruling, the judge said parents can protect their children through software filters and other less restrictive means that do not limit the rights of others to free speech.

Lawmakers in Raleigh are pushing for a stricter ‘smoking ban’ at businesses and public places across North Carolina. The panel voted 9 - 4 this week in favor of the measure, which would ban smoking in all but a few places -- such as private homes, tobacco shops, and private, nonprofit clubs.
The measure now goes to the full House for consideration.

Since Friday, nearly 100 brands of the "cuts and gravy" style pet food have been recalled by Menu Foods of Canada, including popular labels sold at Wal-Mart, Kroger and other large retailers.
Some of the 60 million cans and pouches of food have been blamed for kidney failure in scores of animals. At least 16 pets have died so far after eating the recalled pet food.
Veterinarians nationwide are being swamped with calls about symptoms both real and imagined. Pet owners with animals showing symptoms such as vomiting, lethargy and extreme thirst are being told to bring them in for immediate examination.

Toni wore socks with the Tigger character from the Winnie the Pooh cartoons on them, along with a denim skirt and a brown shirt with a pink border.
The school's policy requires students to wear clothes with solid colors in blue, white, green, yellow, khaki, gray, brown and black. No denim.
A lawsuit was filed earlier this week in Napa County Superior Court by ACLU on the girl's behalf, alleging that the dress code is unconstitutional.

Praise…A Missing Boy Scout was found safe but disoriented:
Congrats to all of the people involved in the search for Michael including
Misha Marshall and her 2-year-old Shiloh shepherd called Gandalf who picked up the boy's scent about a mile from the camp site.
12-year-old Michael Auberry is re-cooperating after being rescued yesterday just before noon. Michael disappeared Saturday afternoon while camping with his Boy Scout troop at Doughton Park in Wilkes County
-The boy’s father said that Michael left his troop on Saturday to try and hitch-hike home…saying that he was ‘homesick’.
The boy's father had talked about one of Michael's favorite books when he was younger, titled "Hatchet" …a story about a boy whose plane crashes in the wilderness, and how the boy survives on his own.
One of Michael’s concerns…"He's worried about make-up work in Miss Self's class." Michael Auberry is a sixth-grader at Mendenhall Middle School.

Conditions in the flooded areas are still unsanitary. Stagnant water is becoming a major breeding ground for mosquitoes…and malaria.

Christian writer and speaker Max Lucado has said that he will step down as senior pastor of Oak Hills Church in San Antonio due to a heart ailment.
Because of fatigue, Lucado will continue preaching on weekends for now, but will opt out of weekly duties.
Lucado ( 51 ) reflecting in a Baptist Press report that “his spiritual heart is in a wonderful state, where his physical heart has developed some irregularities”.
Un-churched Population Nears 100 Million in the U.S.
One out of every three adults meets that qualification for being considered "un-churched." The latest study from The Barna Group indicates that since 1994, adults who have stayed away from churches for six months has remained constant.
The Asian population in the US are un-churched at an alarming 63%.

Rescue crews, using dog teams and aircraft with heat-sensing equipment, continued to search for Michael Auberry…the missing 12-year-old boy who disappeared Saturday afternoon while camping with his Boy Scout troop in the Doughton Park area of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Michael is part of Boy Scout Troop 230 based in the Greensboro. The effort is still being called a ‘search-and-rescue’ mission.

The Thomasville City Council voted last night to approve a policy that would allow an invocation (including praying in the name of Jesus) before the city council meetings. The post office governing board will raise rates from 39 to 41 cents for first class mail starting May 14th. Jennifer Mee, who hiccupped close to 50 times each waking minute for more than five weeks starting January 23, began hiccupping again late last week after a nose bleed. It occured during Mee's second day back at school since her first bout of hiccups stopped Feb. 28.

One fatality and 19 others injured (4 in critical condition) after a fire at Davie Place Residential Care in Mocksville. The fire happened around 10pm last night.
The injured were sent to area hospitals while others were taken to Hilltop Assisted Living in nearby Davidson County.

WXII 12 News morning anchor Tolly Carr was charged with driving while impaired after the vehicle he was driving struck and killed a pedestrian on West First Street in downtown Winston-Salem early Sunday morning.
According to Winston-Salem police…further charges may be pending against the 32-year-old Carr. It was the city's 4th traffic fatality of 2007.

DaimlerChrysler is recalling nearly 500,000 Dodge Durango and Jeep Liberty SUVs. Chrysler has received reports of electrical fires in Dodge Durango SUVs…model years 2004-2006…and Jeep Liberty SUVs…2006-2007.

ConAgra Foods has extended its recall of all Peter Pan peanut butter and all Great Value peanut butter back to 2004 beginning with product code 21-11… including peanut butter toppings. Any peanut butter matching the recall, regardless of the date, can be returned to the place of purchase, or customers can send the lid to ConAgra for a refund.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 425 people have gotten sick from the outbreak of salmonella from peanut butter manufactured at

Franklin Graham, head of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association disclosed Saturday that his youngest son, Capt. Edward Graham, an Army Ranger, has just been injured in Iraq, according to a report in the Charlotte Observer.
"He got shrapnel in his arms, legs and back," a Graham spokesman said. "And he was recovering...in a hospital that can't be named for security reasons."
Reportedly, the wounds to the 27-year-old captain were not "life threatening."

A familiar scent during sleep may help boost memory.
The study found that medical students who slept in rooms with a rose scent scored higher on a card memory test than those who weren't exposed to the rose scent. The memory improvement only occurred during a deep stage of sleep called slow-wave sleep. The German study published in the journal Science.

Daylight-saving time happens this weekend: Spring FORWARD
This Saturday night/Sunday morning (March 11) we ‘spring’ forward one hour. Daylight Saving Time will last until November 4.
Business signs (excluding bill boards) around Forsyth County will be shorter, smaller and less flashy under a new ordinance passed by the City County Planning Board. The new sign ordinance will now head to the Winston-Salem City Council and Forsyth County Board of Commissioners for final approval. (journalnow.com)
Due to restructuring, La-Z-Boy incorporated will eliminate close to 300 jobs at 3 of its manufacturing plants in North Carolina. (fox8wghp)
Connecticut lawmakers are close to passing a bill that would require social-networking Web sites such as MySpace to verify users' ages and force minors to obtain parental consent before posting profiles. Up to 20 other states were considering similar legislation.
The pending bill is intended to protect children from sexual predators.

The state House has tentatively approved a smoking ban inside all state government buildings. The ban would cover any building owned or leased by the state for government offices,
starting January 1, 2008. The latest ban on smoking continues a recent anti-smoking trend in North Carolina, the nation's largest producer of flue-cured tobacco.
Ernest Gallo, a pioneer and giant in the U.S. wine industry, died on Tuesday at age 97 of natural causes at his home in California. Ernest and his brother Julio Gallo worked to establish California's Sonoma County as a premier wine region.

A charter bus carrying the Bluffton University baseball team fell from an overpass onto Interstate 75 early this morning…just north of downtown Atlanta. There were 35 people on the bus… At least 6 fatalities…nine people were listed in serious condition.
