A 6.3 magnitude earthquake caused wide spread devastation on
Sumatra island in western Indonesia. So far, at least 70 people are known dead.
The shaking was also felt hundreds of miles away in Singapore.

Nearly 300 workers at Bassett Furniture will be losing their jobs. The company announced Monday that it will cease operations at its wood manufacturing facility in Henry County located in southwest Virginia. Forsyth County District Attorney Tom Keith said he wants to prevent the case against 22-year-old Keith Carter from being tried by the media.
Carter faces first-degree murder charges in the Feb. 23 shooting death of Sgt. Howard Plouff, a 17-year veteran of the Winston-Salem Police Department.
The DA has filed two motions to keep some information about the case from being made public.
Plouff was shot outside the Red Rooster nightclub as he and other officers tried to break up a fight in the parking lot.

Representative Sue Myrick will re-introduce a bill in Congress that would deport any illegal immigrant convicted of driving while impaired. The "Scott Gardner Act" is a bill named for a teacher from Mount Holly who died in a wreck in 2005. During a question and answer session, the head of a local Latino advocacy group said drinking and driving isn't limited to Hispanics but is a problem for the whole community. www.charlotteobserver.com

After complaining of pain in his left leg on Monday,
After running some tests, doctors have found a blood clot in Vice President Dick Cheney’s left leg. The 66-year-old Cheney, who has a history of heart problems, will be treated with blood-thinning medication for several months.
Doctors suggesting that Cheney’s 65 hours on a plane during a nine day trip recently likely caused the blood clot.

Verizon, Sallie Mae and Georgia-based NetBank have pulled their ads from
AnnCoulter.com…after receiving customer complaints regarding a specific derogatory remark made by far Right commentator Ann Coulter against Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington on Friday. Interesting: The companies didn't know that their ads were on the website until they received complaints over the weekend. www.cnn.com
