One of the largest employers in Davie County is planning job cuts.

Slumping TV ratings and lower-than-projected race attendance has prompted some NASCAR teams to eliminate jobs. Petty Enterprises in Mooresville will lay off 26 employees. Last week, Dale Earnhardt Inc. announced it was cutting as many as 110 jobs by the end of the year. A merger of DEI and Chip Ganassi Racing is in the works.

THE CALIFORNIA STATE SUPREME COURT SAYS IT WILL HEAR A CHALLENGE TO PROPOSITION EIGHT. That's the ballot measure defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman which was passed by California voters on November 4th. A major point of the legal challenge is over whether Proposition Eight was a constitutional revision or an amendment.

President Elect Obama has decided to nominate Tom Daschle, the former Senate Democratic leader, as secretary of health and human services.

TEMPERS HAVE FLARED FOR A SECOND DAY IN THE IRAQI PARLIAMENT, AS LAWMAKERS DEBATE A PLAN FOR U.S. TROOPS TO STAY IN IRAQ THROUGH THE
END OF 20-11. The plan calls for U.S. troops to stay in Iraq until the end of 20-11…replacing
the current U.N. mandate that expires on December 31st of this year.

The 42-year-old man from Boston told authorities that a sneeze caused him to lose control of his pickup on Soldiers Field Road and plunge into Boston's Charles River on Tuesday. A North Carolina sheriff's official has apologized for disrupting a funeral when undercover agents tried to arrest the dead man's son - and used a Taser on him in the process. It happened as the coffin was being loaded into a hearse. The officers planned to quietly arrest pallbearer Gladwyn Taft Russ III.
