The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is seeking the maximum fine of $16.4 million dollars against Toyota Motor Corporation for failing to notify the agency of a "sticky pedal" defect in its cars for at least four months. Under federal regulations, automakers are required to inform the agency within five days of determining that a safety defect exists in one of its products. Deadly mining accident in West Virginia on Monday. 25 coal miners killed with 4 still trapped beneath the earth. Rescue efforts were halted over night because of toxic gases in the shafts. Officials saying that that latest mining disaster, at the Upper Big Branch mine about 30 miles south of Charleston, is the worst since 1984.

A missionary couple from Thomasville died in an auto accident on Saturday. Jerry and Pat Lambeth were currently working at Heath Church in Lexington. The couple had travelled the world and helped communities build churches. The Lambeth’s were turning near a trash dump on Highway 109 when they were rear-ended and pushed into oncoming traffic. No charges have been filed against the driver who rear-ended the couple. Funeral service will be held Saturday at Mt. Zion Church in Lexington. (Fox 8)

Two teenagers have been charged with first-degree murder in the death of a South Carolina woman struck by a rock that was thrown into a car from an overpass. The Richmond County Daily Journal reports that 23-year-old passenger Alicia Thomas of Spartanburg, S.C., later died from injuries when a rock crashed through the windshield as the car passed under a bridge on the Highway 74 -Bypass near Rockingham on Sunday night. http://www.myfox8.com/news/wghp-story-killed-rock-100406,0,6681134.story

Because of excessive drinking, administrators with Wake Forest University are considering making changes to Pledge Night including moving the event back to campus and whether to delay rush, the process of joining a fraternity or sorority, until the beginning of a student's sophomore year. The original Ham's Restaurant on Friendly Avenue in Greensboro is closing after 75 years in business. The restaurant will operate normal business hours until Sunday. Ham's other locations will remain open.
