Increased ‘Fire Danger’ this afternoon because of the unseasonably HOT, dry weather and low humidity. Outdoor burning is NOT recommended.
Doug Jones, Surry County fire marshal, saying that the N.C. Forest Service has been busy chasing down fires that have gotten out of control in recent weeks. The NC Forestry Service was called to contain wild fires 21 times since March 1. For more information about burning permits, call the Surry County Fire Marshal’s Office at 783-9040. Pollen count was literally off the charts yesterday in the Triad. The tree pollen rating in Winston-Salem was 154…the highest recorded level since 1997. That’s when the Forsyth County Environmental Affairs Department started collecting data.

The deaths of 25 workers in a West Virginia coal mine have turned the spotlight on the safety record of the mine's owner, which has paid record fines for safety violations in the past. 4 miners are still unaccounted for. Crews are still trying to drill holes into the shafts to release toxic gases before rescue efforts can resume. The Upper Big Branch mine is about 30 miles south of Charleston, West Virginia.

A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia early Wednesday, triggering two tsunamis and injuring several people.

In a move that has shocked university and local business leaders, UNC system President Erskine Bowles has decided the time is not right for a UNC-G School of Pharmacy.
