The number of women who don't have children is going up, according to a new study. An analysis by the Pew Research Center shows that nearly one in five American women beyond childbearing years never gave birth…and fewer couples view having children as a necessity to a good marriage. In 2008, 18% of women ages 40-44 did not have children. That's up from 10% in 1976. The numbers coincide with broader U.S. trends of women waiting later to marry and an increase of women working outside the home. Women now outnumber men in the work force. The figures also suggest that U.S. minorities will become the majority by mid-century.
