The Guilford County school board voting 8-3 in favor of keeping snow makeup days at end of the school year. That, after a warning from the state Department of Public Instruction this week informing the school system if it held classes after June 10 it would not be in compliance with state law. Scheduled make-up days for students in Guilford will be June 11, 12 and 15.

The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school board voting to merge two elementary schools. Students at Diggs Elementary will move to the Latham Elementary campus. The ‘green light’ has been given for the launch of Space Shuttle Discovery this evening. Discovery will lift-off from Florida's Kennedy Space Center at 9:20pm tonight. The launch was delayed by about a month because of a problem with three fuel control valves.

Nickelodeon says it has no plans to remove pop singer Chris Brown as a nominee for its annual Kids' Choice Awards…despite the singer's felony charges for allegedly beating up his girlfriend Rihanna last month. The City of San Diego has reportedly ‘abandoned’ a proposed policy that would have prevented local ministries from serving the homeless in the city’s Mission Bay Park. HISTORY EXPERTS IN TEXAS SAY THAT HURRICANE IKE MAY HAVE UNCOVERED A CIVIL WAR-ERA SHIPWRECK. Contractors who were hired to survey the floor of the Gulf of Mexico for debris from Hurricane Ike picked up a sonar image that could be that of the ‘Carolina’…a southern merchant ship that ran aground in 1864 after they attempted to break through a federal blockade.
