The Guilford County Board of Health has passed new local restrictions on smoking in governmental buildings. Smoking will be banned inside PTI as of September 1st.
Eight lifeguards were on duty last Friday when a 6-year-old girl was found unresponsive in the deep end of the Kimberly Park Pool in Winston-Salem. Police saying that 30 to 35 people were in the pool when the 6 year old girl, Ja'Nae Nicole McCullum, went under water. An autopsy in Florida shows television pitchman Billy Mays died from heart-related problems, not head trauma. Mays, 50, was on a US Airways flight Saturday from Philadelphia to Tampa, Fla. The flight had a rough landing and Mays had told a reporter in Florida before his death he had bumped his head. Mays was found dead in his Tampa home Sunday. There was speculation that his death may have been linked to the rough landing.

Students who attend Goulds Elementary School in southwest Miami Dade had no problem spelling "school;" however, whoever painted the word on the pavement spelled it "scohol."A DOT spokesman said, "Yes, this is a state road, but Miami-Dade County Public Works painted it there with temporary paint." The misspelled word should be corrected by Friday.

POP SUPERSTAR MICHAEL JACKSON HAS DIED
50-year old Michael Jackson suffered cardiac arrest earlier today. The Los Angeles Times reports that the music icon was not breathing when paramedics arrived at his California home.
Jackson was preparing for a series of concerts in London that were set to begin next month and continue into 2010. Jackson passed away on the same day that 1970’s TV superstar Farrah Fawcett lost her battle with cancer. Fawcett was 62. (RnR)

It’s the state’s first confirmed death from the H1N1 Virus (or Swine Flu). Health officials confirming that a Guilford County man, who died last Friday, tested positive for the H1N1 flu.
The man had flu symptoms after a heart procedure. Dr. Chris Ohl, an infectious-disease specialist at Wake Forest / Baptist Medical Center said that the vast majority of people who contract the H1N1 virus will experience nothing more severe than a case of seasonal flu – just feeling bad for three to seven days. Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines will return a $1,000 dollar campaign contribution given to him in 2005 by Billy Prim, the owner of the WS Dash. Prim also gave smaller donations to two members of the council, Dan Besse and Vivian Burke. It’s the state’s first confirmed death from the H1N1 Virus (or Swine Flu). Health officials confirming that a Guilford County man, who died last Friday, tested positive for the H1N1 flu.
The man had flu symptoms after a heart procedure. Dr. Chris Ohl, an infectious-disease specialist at Wake Forest / Baptist Medical Center said that the vast majority of people who contract the H1N1 virus will experience nothing more severe than a case of seasonal flu – just feeling bad for three to seven days. FYI: Nationwide…there have been 87 deaths related to the H1NI virus as of Friday…with nearly 21,500 confirmed cases nationwide.

Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines will return a $1,000 dollar campaign contribution given to him in 2005 by Billy Prim, the owner of the WS Dash. Prim also gave smaller donations to two members of the council, Dan Besse and Vivian Burke. The council voted unanimously last week to contribute another $15.7 million dollars in additional financial help to build the downtown baseball stadium.

Officials with Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute in Memphis, has confirmed that Steve Jobs, the CEO of Apple, did indeed receive a liver transplant. The 54 year old CEO is recovering and has an excellent prognosis. Back in January, Jobs announced that he would be taking a medical leave of absence from his work at Apple until the end of June.
United Guaranty, the troubled mortgage insurer based in Greensboro, is laying off 160 workers, most of them in North Carolina. The company declined to say how many of the job cuts would be at its headquarters on North Elm Street, where about 500 people work. United Guaranty is a subsidiary of AIG.

Authorities in DC are trying to determine why a Metro commuter train plowed into the back of another train yesterday afternoon. The crash claimed the lives of at least nine people. Nearly 80 other people were injured. Portions of the system's Red Line will remain closed today.
Seven of the 33 babies believed to have been exposed to the H1N1 virus at The Women’s Hospital in Greensboro have now gone home. None of the babies, so far, have shown signs of the swine flu. A respiratory therapist who unknowingly exposed the babies to the virus, tested positive last Thursday. Hospital officials ask that anyone with flu-like symptoms stay at home, drink plenty of fluids, treat their symptoms with over-the-counter medications, avoid contact with others and contact their personal physician if necessary.

Guilford County Schools will continue to provide meals to students over the summer. The school system started the federally funded summer food service program yesterday. You may not want to nibble on your Nestle raw cookie dough. Nestle is recalling its refrigerated Toll House Cookie Dough after the Centers for Disease Control investigation showed "a strong association" between eating raw refrigerated cookie dough made by Nestle and the E. coli illnesses of 65 people in 29 states since March.
Nestles has temporarily stopped making the refrigerated dough products while the FDA investigates their Danville, Virginia factory where all the recalled items are made.

The youth group from Living Word Family Church in Raleigh…on a three-day “Survivor Challenge” camping trip …got a little more ‘adventure’ than they sign up for yesterday. Emergency officials rescued nine boys (ages 10 to 12) from the Uwharrie River (in Montgomery County) after their youth group became separated during a kayaking trip. All the boys were wearing life jackets…No serious injuries were reported.

We didn’t even know. That was the response from passengers on a flight from Belgium to New Jersey when they finally found out that one of their pilots PASSED AWAY...sometime during their flight. Passengers told the New York Times that a call was put out for any doctors who might be on board about half-way through the flight. After the pilot became ill…the two first officers took control of the Continental passenger plane and completed the flight. The airline says that the 60-year old pilot passed away of natural causes.

A flash flood warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring.
Tyco Electronics will close its plant in the Davidson County town of Wallburg. Most of the plant’s workers will be relocated to Greensboro.
A respiratory therapist at The Women’s Hospital in Greensboro might have unknowingly exposed 33 babies this week to the H1N1 virus, or swine flu, after she treated a patient who has since tested positive for the virus. So far, none of the newborns in the neonatal intensive care unit have shown signs of the illness. The babies exposed are being treated with the anti-viral drug Tamiflu. There are 125 confirmed cases of swine flu in North Carolina.

The North Carolina House Committee on Health is scheduled will consider legislation that would legalize marijuana use for medical purposes. The bill, introduced by Rep. Earl Jones (Guilford) and Rep. Beverly Earle (Mecklenburg) would make the drug's use legal for those with medical conditions who have a physician's recommendation.
Thirteen other states have already legalized the use of medical marijuana.

The Winston-Salem City Council voted unanimously last night to provide additional loans for the downtown baseball stadium. The $12 million dollar loan will likely come with some conditions.
Cave Creek, Arizona: The race for the city council went down to the wire…or was it the card?Thomas McGuire and Adam Trent each won 660 votes in an election last month for a seat on the Cave Creek council. A re-count was considered too expensive.So, town leaders invoked a 1925 local statute. Settle the dispute by a game of chance. Previous deadlocks have been decided by gunfights…but the pair opted to draw cards instead.
During a ceremony at the local town hall last week, George Preston, Cave Creek's judge, took out a pair of playing cards from a Stetson hat and shuffled it six times. King of hearts beats a six of hearts…Thomas McGuire (a 64 year old retired teacher who has served two terms on the council) drew the six of hearts. He was beaten by Adam Trent (a 25 year old law student and newcomer to Cave Creek) who pulled the king of hearts. Class ring and yearbook maker Jostens will close its manufacturing operations in Winston-Salem…cutting 185 jobs. All eligible employees will be offered a severance package and outplacement help. Guilford County school officials are closing Oak Ridge Elementary for the summer to try and find a solution to health problems experienced by faculty, staff and students. Earlier in the week, a group of concerned parents brought in their own expert to assess what is making students and some teachers sick. Their finding: black mold. The Guilford County Health Department also released results of a survey from those attending or working at the school. One of the findings: symptoms disappeared once they left the school.

A 3-year-old child suffered second degree burns at a Greensboro Japanese steakhouse on Monday. The accident happened at Kabuto Japanese steakhouse, off Wendover Avenue, when a chef ignited some food and hot oil spilled onto the table where the child was seated. Hundreds of tobacco workers from Reynolds American have traveled to Raleigh today to protest the possibility of higher cigarette taxes. The company is trying to prevent lawmakers from raising the state's excise tax on cigarettes. Governor Beverly Perdue has proposed increasing the tax by $1 per pack. Congress this year raised the federal cigarette tax by 62 cents a pack.

Hundreds of tobacco workers from Reynolds American have traveled to Raleigh today to protest the possibility of higher cigarette taxes. The company is trying to prevent lawmakers from raising the state's excise tax on cigarettes. Governor Beverly Perdue has proposed increasing the tax by $1 per pack. Congress this year raised the federal cigarette tax by 62 cents a pack.

Don Prelich told police that his car was stolen while he was working out at Planet Fitness in Greensboro last weekend. Prelich said he put his car keys on a gym key holder while he was working out, that’s when someone came inside, took his keys and stole his vehicle. The 2005 Honda turned up days later, but Prelich's wallet and other valuables were missing. (He lost a digital camera at $250, a pair of binoculars at $300). Greensboro police said this is the second time in a month that Planet Fitness gym members became victims of the car key theft.

THE SALE OF CHRYSLER TO FIAT IS ON - HOLD
The Washington Post reports that the order from the US Supreme Court simply states the sale is on hold pending further notice.The Obama administration has been a major proponent of Fiat buying Chrysler.The federal government has provided millions of dollars in emergency loans to Chrysler, as well as to General Motors, which is also in bankruptcy protection

Congrats finally: A 90-year-old Chicago woman who dropped out of school to help her family during the Great Depression now has her high school diploma.
Eleanor Benz left Chicago Public Schools' Lake View High in 1936 during her senior year to take a job. Benz later got married: having 15 children, 54 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.
Benz attended night school for typing and bookkeeping, but she recently told one of her daughters that never completing high school was one of her greatest disappointments. Her children contacted Lake View, and the school approved Benz's diploma. This week, at her 90th birthday party, Benz's family presented her with the diploma and a 2009 gown and cap with a 1936 tassel.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for most of northwest North Carolina through Friday morning
A ‘Watch’ means there is a potential for Flooding or Flash Flooding based on the current forecast
Storm update in Greensboro: Portions of east and northeast Greensboro were hit by flash flooding in a short period of time on Wednesday. Greensboro Police saying that all roads are now open across the city.-Greensboro Fire and Rescue crews responded to 115 ‘emergency’ calls from 4:30 pm to 9:30pm. Thirty of those calls involved vehicles stranded in water.

One fatality associated with the Flash Flooding last night. The Highway Patrol says a woman who had been rescued from an overflowing creek near Northeast Middle School (around the 6700 block of McLeansville Road) in Greensboro drowned after she jumped back into the creek. The woman's body was later recovered.
