Local Pastor Wins State Volunteer Award

When Preacher Clyde Akers' Junior Sunday School teacher took him to Burger King 42 years ago he had no idea how much return he would get for the cost of a Whopper. That simple act of kindness to a 13-year-old growing up in a cash-strapped family of nine children sparked a care for others in Akers that continues to give to hundreds of people in Davidson County today. Now a minister at Freedom Baptist Church, Akers was one of 20 people statewide to be given the NC Medallion for Outstanding Volunteer Service earlier this month by Gov. Mike Easley."
