Today is Presidents Day
Banks and Post Offices are closed today

It’s the largest beef recall in US history: A meat packing company from California is recalling 143-million pounds of beef. The Agriculture Department says the recall covers raw and frozen beef products produced since February of 2006.

About 150 school districts around the nation have stopped using ground beef from Hallmark Meat Packing Co., which is associated with Westland.
Two fast-food chains, Jack-In-the-Box and In-N-Out, said they would not use beef from Westland/Hallmark. McDonald's and Burger King say that they do not buy beef from Westland. http://www.healthday.com/Article.asp?AID=612742

As many as nine tornadoes reportedly touched down across central Alabama yesterday. There were no reports of fatalities, but two people reportedly suffered serious injuries. Another two dozen people suffered minor cuts and bruises.Former first lady Nancy Reagan was taken to the hospital on Sunday after a fall at her home. Doctors say that she will remain hospitalized overnight as a precaution

Polls are now closed in Pakistan. Pakistan holding its first parliamentary elections in six years. Now, the counting begins.

Its Red and Black day on the campus of Virginia Tech today. Virginia Tech and the surrounding Blacksburg community are showing solidarity for the students, faculty and families of Northern Illinois University. NIU was the site of the latest deadly shooting that left 6 people dead last Thursday. Classes at NIU have been cancelled this week. Northern Illinois University is located about 75 miles west of Chicago.

-A candle light vigil tonight at 6:30pm in honor of the victims of the NIU shooting. The vigil will be held under Torgerson Bridge on the VT campus.
-Care Packages: Hokies United has decided to send care packages to NIU students, similar to the packages Virginia Tech received last spring. Items for the care packages will be collected Wednesday through Friday of this week. Those item include…letters of condolence and notes of encouragement, candy, small prepackaged snacks, water, soda, and other drinks.
Location of the collection: Squires Student Center, room 314 from 10 am to 5 pm.
