As many as 100 American missionaries, including seven missionaries from North Carolina, are trapped in the West African nation of Cameroon.
Anti-government riots have spread beyond the capital city making travel unsafe.
One of the local missionaries unable to leave Cameroon is Dr. Keith Phillips (with Phillips and Cuthrell…Winston-Salem Dentistry). Dr Phillips, a resident of Yadkin County, traveled to Cameroon on a missionary trip last week with his Giving Hand Foundation. Members of the Giving Hand Foundation were helping locals with free and reduced dental clinics in Cameroon.-The missionaries are not in imminent danger and expect to leave on Sunday.-Protests over high food and fuel prices in Cameroon have led to at least 17 deaths since the rioting began last weekend. North Carolina regulators decided yesterday to deny proposals by both Baptist Hospital and Forsyth Medical Center who are battling over who will build a new hospital either in Clemmons or 4 miles apart in Davie County.
