Red Flag Warning for Central NC including the Triad

The Flu season is at its peak. The Emergency Room at Forsyth Medical Center was slammed last week. Because of the extra traffic at the ER, Novant Health will extend the hours at its prime care on Highland Oaks Drive. The clinic will remain open until 11:30pm daily for the next 8 weeks.

FIDEL CASTRO IS STEPPING DOWN AS PRESIDENT OF CUBA. The surprise announcement came from Castro in the form of a letter published in the on-line version of a state run communist newspaper. Castro’s brother will continue day to day operations in Cuba.

The United States has officially recognized Kosovo as an independent nation. President Bush saying that Kosovo as an independent nation will bring peace to a region scarred by war.
-President Bush (and the First Lady) in Rwanda this morning. The president at the third stop of his five nation tour of Africa.
-Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice made a visit to Kenya yesterday to encourage stability after post election violence that has caused havoc in Kenya.

The battle between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray disc technology is over. Toshiba said yesterday that it will no longer develop, make or market HD DVD players and recorders. Last month's decision by Warner Bros. Clarence and Mayme Vail celebrated their 83rd wedding anniversary on Sunday. The Minnesota couple could be heading for the Guiness Book of Records. One of their six children has filed the paperwork required by the Guiness record-keepers. Clarence is 101 and Mayme is 99.
The couple from White Bear Lake, Minnesota was married in 1925. They have six children, 39 grandchildren, 101 great-grandchildren, and 40 great-great-grandchildren.

Early weather forecasts look good for Wednesday morning's planned touchdown space shuttle Atlantis at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

In an unrelated story…The US Navy will attempt to shoot down a faulty spy satellite on Thursday. Why you may be asking…because the 5,000-pound satellite malfunctioned immediately after launch in December 2006, it has a full tank of fuel. It would likely survive re-entry and disperse potentially deadly fumes over an area the size of two football fields.

Russian Space Cowboys…packing ‘Heat’? Russian Cosmonauts carry a gun on their Soyuz space capsule, which is attached to the International Space Station. Every spacecraft carries survival gear for crash landings…the Russian Soyuz has a kit that includes the gun. The gun is located in a survival kit between some seats aboard the Soyuz spacecraft. All the crewmembers know about it…and U.S. astronauts who fly aboard the Soyuz are trained to use it.
NASA and Russian officials won't talk publicly about it.
-A former NASA engineer (Jim Oberg), an author and journalist, who wrote about the gun on his Web site…said that a gun has no place in an environment where people are under such high stress.
"There have been cases of severe psychological strain on people in space, strain that they have taken out -- that their shipmates worried about the ultimate actions," Oberg said.
