THE NUMBER OF CONFIRMED CASES OF SWINE FLU IN THE UNITED STATES IS UP TO 64. Nations around the world are taking measures to stop or slow the spread of the infection. In Mexico, the death toll has climbed to 159, with nearly 13,000 people hospitalized with swine flu-like symptoms. Besides the U.S. and Mexico, cases of the virus have also been confirmed in Israel, Spain, Costa Rica, Canada, Germany, and New Zealand. No Swine Flu cases have been reported in North Carolina.

An outbreak of swine flu that is suspected in more than 150 deaths in Mexico and has sickened dozens of people in the United States and elsewhere has grabbed the attention of a nervous public and of medical officials worried the strain will continue to mutate and spread. Experts are nervous that, as a new strain, the swine flu will be harder to stop because there aren't any vaccines to fight it. http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/04/28/regular.flu/index.html

LONGTIME REPUBLICAN SENATOR ARLEN SPECTER HAS SWITCHED HIS PARTY AFFILIATION AND IS NOW A DEMOCRAT. Specter's move puts Democrats just one seat away from holding a filibuster-proof majority of 60 members in the Senate. Specter was one of the most liberal Republicans in the U.S. Senate. The chairman of the Republican National Committee says Specter did not leave the GOP based on principles. Instead, says Michael Steele, Specter left the party because he knew he was going to lose a Republican primary due to his, quote, "left wing voting record."

THE U.S. SENATE HAS CONFIRMED KATHLEEN SEBELIUS AS THE NATION'S NEXT SECRETARY OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES. Sebelius leaves her role as Governor of Kansas to head HHS. They pointed to her liberal abortion-rights political record and her financial and political ties to late term abortion doctor George Tiller.

THE U.S. SUPREME COURT HAS RULED THAT THE FCC CAN FINE TELEVISION BROADCASTERS FOR THE AIRING OF SO-CALLED "FLEETING EXPLETIVES". At issue was a policy change the Federal Communications Commission made in 2004. The TV networks challenging the revised policy argued that the FCC created it without sufficient explanation. Previous FCC policy did not penalize broadcasters for the occasional airing of a foul word during a live program. The justices voted five to four in favor of allowing the FCC to impose the stricter standards.
