Friends and family are remembering Robert Staley who died in a motorcycle accident Saturday afternoon on Highway 601 near the Davie-Rowan county line. Staley (age 38) was an 11 year veteran of the Winston-Salem police department. Staley was also a member of the North Carolina National Guard / 30th Heavy Combat Brigade. His unit is set for deployment to Iraq this week. Bobby Staley is survived by his wife (April) and two children (Allison and Jill).

Each year, about one million people commit suicide, which accounts for 1.5% of all deaths worldwide. The world average is 15 suicides per 100,000 people, but some countries are well above that level. The study was published in the medical journal The Lancet.

Update: Police say a gunman who hijacked a Canadian plane in Jamaica has been captured after an eight-hour standoff with police. A gunman described as a "mentally challenged youngster" hijacked a Canadian jet on the tarmac near the resort city of Montego Bay, Jamaica last night. The hijacker, believed to be in his early 20s, was demanding to be flown to Cuba.

Eastern Guilford High School will officially open the doors to students its new campus today. Officials are still investigating the intentionally fire set to the old campus two-and-a-half years ago.

Some school districts in North Carolina are eliminating or reducing summer school because of budget problems. The News & Observer of Raleigh reporting that schools in Durham, Johnson and Mecklenburg counties are trimming back summer school classes. Other districts, such as Hoke County, are canceling summer school. North Carolina doesn't require school districts to offer summer classes.http://www.newsobserver.com

Miss North Carolina Kristen Dalton was crowned Miss USA 2009 last night in Las Vegas. Kristen will go to the Bahamas in August to compete in the Miss Universe pageant.

The head of Iran’s judiciary has ordered the “careful, quick and fair” consideration of an appeal against the eight-year jail sentence imposed on Roxana Saberi, an Iranian-American journalist. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad urged the chief prosecutor to reexamine the case. One study showing that people who smile in photos are less likely to divorce? Researchers at DePauw University in Indiana evaluated the smiles in the school yearbook photos of 225 women and 124 men (ages 21 to 81) who were asked to provide details about their personal life. The study, published in the journal Motivation and Emotion, demonstrates that extremely small behavior clues can reveal how people will fare in marriage.
