Thick, gray smoke and ash filling the North Myrtle Beach sky this morning. At least 40 homes in (Or-ee) Horry County (in the North Myrtle Beach area) were destroyed by wildfires overnight. Schools are open but roughly 2,500 residents have been evacuated. An estimated 7 to 8,000 acres have been burned. The fires started about noon yesterday and are still out-of-control. http://www.thesunnews.com/
Also…Officials in North Myrtle Beach began evacuating the Barefoot Landing resort early this morning. Emergency shelters have been set up at City Hall and the House of Blues at Barefoot Landing. One ‘well-known’ golf course (the Grande Dunes Resort) has been damaged.

A 16-year-old Page High School student has been charged with carrying a gun onto school property. A School Resource Officer located the student in question but the student ran away from the officer. Both Page High School and nearby St Pius X Catholic School were put on lock-down for a short time. The suspect was caught and arrested a short time later.

An Illinois food company Nonni's Food Company, makers of ‘Biscotti’, is converting the old UNIFI plant facility in Yadkinville into its newest commercial bakery…creating 172 jobs. An extended ‘vacation’ for GM workers? General Motors planning on closing most of its factories for nine weeks over the summer because of low demand and a growing inventory of unsold vehicles.

The so-called ‘Morning After’ pill will now be available without a prescription to consumers as young as 17 years old. The FDA will comply with a March 23rd ruling by a federal court mandating the new availability. Previously one had to be at least 18 years of age to buy the Morning After Pill without a prescription.

Where supplements to blame? Championship polo matches are scheduled to resume in Florida four days after 21 prized horses from a Venezuelan-owned team mysteriously died. The International Polo Club Palm Beach plans a memorial ceremony for the dead horses after today’s last match at the U.S. Open Polo Championship.
