Countries around the world are stepping up swine flu precautions. The World Health Organization raised its global alert level on Monday stating that the ‘Swine Flu’ virus is spreading BUT stopping short of declaring a global emergency.
-The death toll from swine flu has risen to 152 in Mexico.
-Health officials are looking at pigs in Mexico as a potential source of the outbreak.

New this morning: ‘Binge drinking’ likely the cause of death for a female college at ASU. Boone police identified the student as Raisa Sheikh, an Appalachian State University student from Charlotte. Sheikh was a freshman majoring in art. Officers were sent to an apartment complex near ASU after a call that a person was unresponsive after drinking alcohol. Sheikh was taken to Watauga Medical Center, where she died.

The State House passing changes to spanking in public schools. School districts where corporal punishment is allowed would have to give parents the option of exempting their children from ‘spanking’. In the proposed Bill, school officials would be required to make a "reasonable attempt" to contact a parent before such punishment is administered. The measure now goes to the Senate. Fifty-five of the 115 districts allow corporal punishment.

Big airplane with a fighter jet flying low over New York City? Mayor Michael Bloomberg says he is furious that the federal government flew a presidential Boeing 747 and a fighter jet near Ground Zero yesterday in New York City. The FAA and the Air Force saying that the flight was a government photo-op and training mission involving a presidential plane.Bloomberg says the fly-over so near the World Trade Center site showed "poor judgment”. The NYPD was notified last week, but did not tell the Mayor.

Two 11-year-old North Carolina students have won $10,000 in a weekend Scrabble championship in Rhode Island. The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Tuesday that fifth-graders Andy Hoang and Erik Salgado beat the New Jersey team to win the 2009 National School Scrabble Championship.
