THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY BRIDGE IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN CLOSED THIS MORNING. Repair crews have been battling 50-miles-per-hour winds to make necessary repairs to the bridge. The bridge was closed after pieces fell onto the road Tuesday.
For nearly five hours yesterday, former Governor Mike Easley answered questions about private flights, home repairs, car payments and bogus invoices. Ham's Restaurants Inc has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Chapter 11 allows a business to stay open as it re-organizes. Ham’s operates 14 locations in North Carolina and Virginia.
Parts of Wyoming and Colorado are bracing for an early season snow storm. The storm could bring 12 to 18 inches of snow, as well as blizzard-like conditions, to the Cheyenne area through Thursday.
SAN FRANCISCO'S BAY BRIDGE HAS BEEN CLOSED INDEFINITELY. A piece of the bridge fell onto the roadway on Tuesday. The Bay Bridge just underwent a major repair last month. Local ferry services are gearing up for extra passengers. Authorities are allowing residents of nearby Treasure Island to use one of the bridge's onramps.
On a typical day, nearly 280 thousand vehicles cross the Bay Bridge, between San Francisco and Oakland, California.
SENATOR JOE LIEBERMAN SAYS HE WOULD BACK A GOP FILIBUSTER OF THE HEALTH CARE REFORM BILL SPONSORED BY SENATE MAJORITY LEADER HARRY REID. Lieberman says he opposes any health care bill that includes a government run insurance program. The Politico newspaper reports that confirms Reid is short of the 60 votes necessary to bring the legislation to a vote.
The two Northwest Airlines pilots who overshot their Minneapolis destination by 150 miles have been grounded ‘indefinitely’ unless the National Transportation Safety Board grants them a reprieve. The pilots have 10 days to appeal.
No launch yesterday maybe this morning. NASA is preparing to launch its next-generation rocket this morning 8 a.m. from Kennedy Space Center. The next launch window extends until noon. Ares I-X is a part of the Constellation Program. The program has been developing new vehicles to replace space shuttles, which will be phased out in 2010

Traffic Problem in Guildford County: NB I-85 at Highway 62
Overturned tractor trailer at mile marker 118 near the GTCC / Groomtown Road Exit has I-85 shutdown at Hwy 62. Detour: Take I-85 NB to Highway 62/Liberty Road exit in Archdale and go east to Highway 220 north. Expect delays for several hours. An early morning wreck on the Highway 29 ramp to NB I-85 in Concord. Police say the driver of a cattle truck lost control and flipped over. The truck driver died on the scene. A passenger was taken to the hospital.

THE FBI SAYS IT HAS JUST WRAPPED UP A RECENT NATIONWIDE OPERATION THAT RESCUED 52 CHILDREN FROM PROSTITUTION. The three-day effort called ‘Operation Cross Country Four’ was carried out in 36 cities and led to the arrest of nearly seven hundred people. The FBI operation involved state and local law enforcement, as well as the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
The two pilots on that Northwest Flight from San Diego to Minneapolis-St. Paul that flew right past their destination last week are blaming the highly publicized mishap on their laptop.
Flight 188 flew 150 miles beyond their scheduled stop and the pilots had no communication with air traffic controllers for more than 90 minutes. Northwest says the pilots are suspended until the conclusion of the investigation.
THE PUBLIC OPTION HAS RETURNED TO THE HEALTH CARE REFORM DEBATE. The health care reform legislation that emerged from the Senate Finance Committee recently did not contain the so-called public option.
THE HEAD OF TURKEY'S POLICE INTELLIGENCE DEPARTMENT HAS REPORTEDLY BEEN REMOVED FROM HIS POST FOR NOT DOING ENOUGH TO PREVENT DEADLY VIOLENCE AGAINST CHRISTIANS IN THE COUNTRY. Studies suggest that Vitamin D might help prevent serious diseases, including infections, diabetes and even some cancers. A worker at the NC State Fair was injured yesterday while trying to break down a ride. The man fell 15 feet. The injured worker was taken to the hospital. Sunday was the last day of the State Fair.

THE TEMPLE MOUNT IN JERUSALEM IS CALM TODAY, AFTER VIOLENT CLASHES AT THE SACRED SITE ON SUNDAY. The Jerusalem Post reports that nine police officers were slightly wounded and 21 Arab rioters were arrested during clashes at the Temple Mount yesterday. The Temple Mount is sacred to both Jews and Muslims.
NATO AUTHORITIES SAY TWO SEPARATE HELICOPTER CRASHES HAVE CLAIMED THE LIVES OF 14 AMERICANS IN AFGHANISTAN TODAY.
WORLD LEADERS HAVE CONDEMNED SUNDAY'S DEADLY TWIN BOMBING ATTACK IN BAGHDAD. Combined, the two blasts claimed the lives of 155 people and wounded nearly five hundred others. Sunday's bombs were detonated just outside the heavily fortified Green Zone, the location of numerous government offices. The attack was one of the largest to rock the capital city of Iraq in several years.
An 80-foot section of a cement roof cap fell to the sidewalk from a building on East Russell Ave. on Friday night in High Point. No one was injured. It's unclear why the roof cap fell.
The building at 325 East Russell Ave. is unoccupied, but the county was in the process of remodeling it for us by Guilford County Department of Social Services. Police closed Russell Ave. between Manning and Centennial streets.

Top ‘bail-out’ dogs will likely get a pay cut… The chairman of the panel that oversees the $700 billion dollar federal bail-out fund is saying that the Obama administration is ready to order substantial cuts in the salaries of CEOs that took ‘bail-out’ money from the government.
Employees of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools will be subject to random background checks after officials discovered a middle school drama teacher with a criminal past had slipped through the cracks. Currently, background checks are only performed when employees are hired by the school system. Ralph Surridge, a drama teacher at Mineral Springs Middle School, was arrested Saturday on charges of sexual mis-conduct with a student. Investigators later learned Surridge had served jail time for felony embezzlement charges in 1985, something school officials said they were unaware of when they hired Surridge in 2003.

A Duke Energy agreement would raise energy rates 7% starting January 1st. That would be Duke Energy’s first increase since 1991. A hearing on the proposed rate hike is set for later today.
The City of Greensboro has been recognized by the League of American Bicyclists as a Bronze level Bicycle Friendly Community. Being designated as a ‘bicycle friendly’ community will help Greensboro ‘build momentum’ in making cycling a viable form of transportation in the city.

A PIG HAS CONTRACTING THE H1N1 -- OR SWINE FLU The Department of Agriculture says it has confirmed the presence of H1N1 in a pig at the Minnesota State Fair. The government has stressed that people cannot get H1N1 flu from eating pork.

A man and a woman from Winston-Salem have been arrested in connection with the death of a 4-year-old boy…after deputies were called to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center at the request of medical staff regarding life-threatening injuries to the 4-year-old boy. James Morrison Jr. faces one count of murder. DebraLee Matthews faces one count of accessory to murder after the fact. The Forsyth County sheriff's office is investigating the death.

Despite the chilly temperatures, a record number of walkers (over 6,000 walkers) participated in the Greater Greensboro CROP Hunger Walk yesterday. Close to $200,000 dollars was raised to help fight hunger. 25% of the funds raised through the CROP Hunger Walk will come back to Greensboro Urban Ministry Potter’s House Community Kitchen…who feeds over 450 individuals every day. The family of Monte Evans, the man who allegedly shot and killed Sgt. Mickey Hutchens last week, paid their respects to the Winston-Salem Police Department on Wednesday. The Evans family laid flowers next to Sgt. Hutchens patrol car and asked the community for forgiveness.
The body of Sgt. Mickey Hutchens will lie in state this afternoon from 2 – 5pm at Wait Chapel on the campus of Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem. A memorial service will is set for Friday at 2pm at Wait Chapel. Both services will be open to the public.

A SCHOOL BOARD IN GEORGIA HAS REPORTEDLY UPHELD A POLICY PROHIBITING CHEERLEADERS FROM DISPLAYING RELIGIOUS BANNERS ON THE FIELD AT HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL GAMES. Associated Baptist Press reports that the Catoosa County Public School Board accepted their attorney's argument that the signs were unconstitutional. The prohibition against the banners was first put in place during a September 28th school board meeting and it was met with widespread opposition. The superintendant said that while she regretted removing the banners from the field, it was her responsibility to protect the district from a lawsuit. Opposition to the banners was first raised by a local woman who said they violate federal law. A local attorney argued that the signs were protected under the First Amendment.

Franklin Graham met with North Korea's foreign minister earlier today. Franklin Graham, who heads relief agency Samaritan's Purse, arrived in the capital city on Tuesday to deliver aid, saying he hoped his visit would "play the role of a bridge for better relations" between the U.S. and North Korea. Randy Fulton, the principal of Mineral Springs Middle School, has been named as the 2009 Wachovia Principal of the Year in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. Fulton has worked for the school system for 33 years, including the past nine as principal at Mineral Springs Middle School. Fulton will now compete with other local award winners from Northwest North Carolina. One of eight regional winners will be selected as the 2009 N.C. Wachovia Principal of the Year.
The Billy Graham Rapid Response Team will host a training session this Saturday morning (Oct17) at Westover Church in Greensboro. The training event is titled “Sharing Hope in Crisis.” Participants will also learn more about the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team, the nationwide crisis ministry of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. There is no charge to attend.
FYI: The Billy Graham Rapid Response Team was developed following the attacks of September 11, 2001. The team has grown to more than 3,000 chaplains in 40 states who are specifically trained to deal with crisis situations.

A Wake Forest University student was found dead in her dorm room early yesterday morning. 21 year old Canda Kinney, of Lexington, was a senior at Wake. Wake Forest University police and Winston-Salem police are investigating her death, but don't believe it involved foul play.
The Reynolda House Museum of American Art will close during the month of January in efforts of remaining within its operating budget. The cost of operating Reynolda House varies from month to month. The museum's operating budget for the past fiscal year was $3.9 million dollars. Sad news this morning: One of the Winston-Salem police officers shot last week near the Bojangles off Peters Creek Parkway has died from his injuries. Sgt. Mickey Hutchens passed away just before 7pm last night. Funeral arrangements are still incomplete.
-Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines has declared today through Friday (Oct. 13-16) as a period of ‘civic mourning’. Hutchens is survived by his wife, Beth, and the couple's two daughters.

THE SENATE FINANCE COMMITTEE IS EXPECTED TO VOTE ON THE BAUCUS HEALTH CARE REFORM LEGISLATION TODAY. The Finance Committee is expected to approve the bill today, sending it on to the full Senate for consideration. The pro-life community is opposing the Baucus bill, saying that the measure does not contain an explicit ban on federally funded abortions. The Congressional Budget Office estimates the plan would cost $829 billion dollars.
Up to 6 inches of rain is expected in southwestern California today. The National Weather Service warning that all that rain could trigger mudslides in areas that were recently hit by wildfires.
A search is underway in the Philippines for an Irish Priest who was abducted over the weekend. The 78-year old priest was taken from his home by six armed men on Saturday. Update: One officer still in critical condition, one officer may be going home after the shooting incident near the Bojangles on Peters Creek Parkway. Winston-Salem Police Chief Scott Cunningham is describing Sgt Mickey Hutchens' condition as "a roller coaster," and said that his injuries are "extremely serious." Officer Daniel Clark was also hospitalized, but he was expected to be released last night or this morning. THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES HAS PASSED A CONTROVERSIAL EXPANSION OF HATE CRIMES LEGISLATION. Under the bill approved on Thursday, existing hate crimes laws would now extend protection to people based on their sexual orientation. Critics say the measure threatens to infringe upon the constitutional freedoms of speech and religion. The Bill will now go to the Senate for final approval.
NASA crashed a space probe into the moon this morning…on purpose. The upper stage of a satellite hit the moon at around 7:35am this morning. Roughly four minutes later, the second stage of the satellite travelled through the dust plume to collect ‘vapor samples’ before it crashed into the moon. Scientists will study that data to determine if there is any water in the moon's soil.

Winston-Salem police Sgt. Mickey Hutchens remains in critical condition this morning after being shot while responding to a call at the Bojangles on Peters Creek Parkway yesterday morning.
The second Officer Daniel Clark is listed in serious condition and is expected to recover. Hutchens and Clark were shot while chasing a man behind the restaurant. The suspect, Monte Denard Evans, was shot and killed at the scene.

Dell will close its desktop computer manufacturing plant in Winston-Salem in January. Approximately 905 employees will be affected by the closing…with about 600 employees losing their jobs in November. Mayor Allen Joines said the city is well-protected from potential losses incurred by the plant's closing. Dell is expected to repay the city of Winston-Salem $15.5 million dollars. Before Dell opened the plant in 2005, the company was promised more than $300 million in state and local incentives. A girl remains in critical condition after being shot in the head at her home on West Church Street in Mt Airy on Tuesday afternoon. According to police, the girl was accidentally shot by her brother. The girl will have at least one operation before being released from the hospital. No charges have been filed.

As the first wave of the Swine Flu vaccine crosses the country, more than a third of parents are still unsure if they will allow their children to get the swine flu shot. In an AP poll, 38% of parents say that they are unlikely to give permission for their children to be vaccinated at school. Also, 72% of those surveyed are worried about possible side effects from the new Swine Flu vaccine. AP

N.C. A&T has removed its name and financial support from the university’s annual homecoming concert after complaints about hiring a gang-affiliated rapper. With recent controversy about rapper Gucci Mane performing as the concert headliner, Chancellor Harold Martin said that A & T had to take a “moral stand” not be in any way, shape or form associated with the rapper’s message or his image.” With more than 8,000 tickets sold, the show will go on as planned

Five dogs that were involved in the attack of a 5 year old child in Pinnacle two weeks ago were euthanized on Monday. According to officials with Surry County Animal Control, the dogs were euthanized after the owner couldn't afford to build a structure to keep the dogs contained.

THE WEATHER HAS BEEN HELPING FIREFIGHTERS BATTLING A 78 HUNDRED-ACRE WILDFIRE IN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA. The so-called Sheep Fire is now 30% contained. The flames are burning about 40 miles northeast of downtown LA.
After their performance Saturday at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh, the members of the band U2 were hungry. The News & Observer of Raleigh saying that Cooper's BBQ was about to close Saturday night when the band's private jet services coordinator called, asking for enough food for 25 people including: barbecue, pork rinds, five fried chickens, pig skins, ribs, cole slaw, hush puppies. Owners Debbie and Randy Holt said yes to the special order…but they don't take credit cards. Cash only. The bill came out to $277 dollars. Debbie Holt and her 14-year-old daughter, Ashley, delivered the food to U2's private jet at Raleigh-Durham International Airport around 11pm Saturday night.

Two new government studies saying that about 1 in 100 children have autism disorders -- higher than a previous U.S. estimate of 1 in 150. Greater awareness, broader definitions and spotting autism in younger children may explain some of the increase. President Obama has made autism a priority for research. On Sunday, Vice President Joe Biden and 6 of the 9 current Supreme Court Justices attended the traditional ‘Red Mass’ a service for the protection of the unborn. The Red Mass has been held at Washington's Saint Matthews Church on the Sunday before the start of the new Supreme Court every year since 1953. The US Supreme Court begins its new term today.
Firefighters are battling a wild fire in California. The blaze, dubbed the Sheep Fire, because it started near Sheep Canyon Road, has consumed 75-hundred acres. The fire is only 20% contained.

A ban on plastic bottles in state landfills takes effect Today (Oct 01). North Carolina is the first state in the southeast to pass such a ban on all water bottles, milk jugs, soda bottles, shampoo bottles and juice bottles.
