PRESIDENT OBAMA HAS WON THE 2009 NOBEL PEACE PRIZE. The Nobel Committee says it awarded the honor to President Obama for his, quote, “extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.” It says that President Obama has given the people of the world “hope for a better future.”

Update: One officer still in critical condition, one officer may be going home after the shooting incident near the Bojangles on Peters Creek Parkway. Winston-Salem Police Chief Scott Cunningham is describing Sgt Mickey Hutchens' condition as "a roller coaster," and said that his injuries are "extremely serious." Officer Daniel Clark was also hospitalized, but he was expected to be released last night or this morning. In response to the incident that happened on Wednesday, there will be a community prayer vigil at noon today at Corpening Plaza in downtown Winston-Salem. The community is being asked to remember the officers and all of the families involved in the shootings.

Have you noticed that some of the trees in our area are turning color? Foliage on top of Grandfather Mountain is almost at its peak. Peak color for the Boone and Blowing Rock area will be over the weekends of October 16th and 23rd. Asheville will have peak color around October 23rd to 28th.

The city of Greensboro will start collecting leaves early in November. Leaves that are by the curb by Nov. 9 will be picked up by Dec. 12. Leaves that are by the curb by Dec. 14 will be picked up by Jan. 22. The collected leaves are made into compost to fertilize city gardens and landscaped areas. THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES HAS PASSED A CONTROVERSIAL EXPANSION OF HATE CRIMES LEGISLATION. Under the bill approved on Thursday, existing hate crimes laws would now extend protection to people based on their sexual orientation. Critics say the measure threatens to infringe upon the constitutional freedoms of speech and religion. The Bill will now go to the Senate for final approval.

NASA crashed a space probe into the moon this morning…on purpose. The upper stage of a satellite hit the moon at around 7:35am this morning. Roughly four minutes later, the second stage of the satellite travelled through the dust plume to collect ‘vapor samples’ before it crashed into the moon. Scientists will study that data to determine if there is any water in the moon's soil.
