A ban on plastic bottles in state landfills takes effect Today (Oct 01). North Carolina is the first state in the southeast to pass such a ban on all water bottles, milk jugs, soda bottles, shampoo bottles and juice bottles. AN INTERNATIONAL RELIEF EFFORT IS UNDERWAY TO PROVIDE ASSISTANCE TO THE PEOPLE OF THE SAMOAN ISLANDS, REELING FROM A DEADLY EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI THAT HIT ON TUESDAY. American Samoa (home to 65,000 people) is located about halfway between New Zealand and Hawaii in the South Pacific.

PRO-LIFE GROUPS ARE SHARPLY CRITICIZING A SENATE FINANCE COMMITTEE VOTE ON ABORTION COVERAGE IN THE LATEST HEALTH CARE REFORM. By a vote of 13 to ten, the committee rejected an amendment that would have kept abortion out of the health care reform bill the members are debating. Meanwhile, the panel did vote to uphold 50 million dollars a year in abstinence education funding.

Amber Alert Cancelled: Authorities in Iredell County canceled an Amber Alert for a pregnant 12-year-old girl and her 11-year-old sister after the children were found safe in Tennessee. The International Olympic Committee will decide Friday whether Chicago will get to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, or whether the games instead will be played in Madrid, Rio de Janeiro or Tokyo. One group of Chicagoans is heading off to Copenhagen to try to win the 2016 Olympic Games for Chicago, but others are gathering in the Windy City to rally against the games.
