A Triad Wal-Mart employee was brutally beaten after trying to get the license plate number of an alleged shoplifter. Kenneth Lehman, a customer service manager at the Kernersville Wal-Mart, said he wasn't trying to be a hero, just help police catch a culprit who had run out of the store with a home theater system. The robber fractured Lehman's skull, and left him with a black eye and other bruises during the beating. Police said the man fled the area in a two-door red hatchback. The 150-million dollar economic stimulus package has made it through the House of Representatives. President Bush is urging the Senate to pass the bill without making any major changes to it. The plan will provide rebate checks of up to twelve-hundred dollars per couple. Plus, three-hundred dollars for each eligible dependent child.
Senator Richard Burr has introduced a bill in Congress that would establish a sales tax holiday from April 4 through April 13. The states who suspend collection of their sales taxes during that period would get 60% of their lost revenue reimbursed by the federal government.
Immediate savings from major retailer: Wal-Mart is cutting prices by ten to 30% on thousands of items throughout its stores…including food.
Compassion International has received the ‘MySpace Impact Award for Poverty Relief.’ The award recognizes members of the MySpace community for the positive impact they've had on our culture and how they use MySpace to multiply their reach. The National Weather Service has issued a ‘Wind Advisory’ late tonight through noon Wednesday for Central NC. Included in the Wind Advisory: Davie, Rowan, Surry and Wilkes counties.
After nearly 44 years protecting Greensboro, Fire Chief Johnny Teeters announced Monday that he will retire at the end of the year.
Starting today, a portion of Church Street in Greensboro will be closed for most of the year as crews work to replace a bridge. Church Street between Cornwallis Drive and Wendover Avenue will be closed from 7am to 7pm. The work is expected to continue until December.

THE WHITE HOUSE AND CONGRESS HAVE AGREED ON A 150-MILLION DOLLAR ECONOMIC STIMULUS PACKAGE THAT WILL LIKELY MEAN CASH IN YOUR POCKET. The bi-partisan deal will provide rebate checks of up to six-hundred dollars per individual wage earner and twelve-hundred dollars per couple. It would also provide three-hundred dollars for each eligible dependent child.
Middle-school students in the Winston-Salem / Forsyth County school system will have to take three years of foreign language starting next year. Flu bug on the rise: The NC Division of Public Health reporting that the number of flu cases statewide nearly tripled last week. Over 100 families that currently have kids enrolled at Center Grove Christian Academy in Clemmons may need to find a new school. Center Grove could be closing its doors. An outside team hired to analyze the school’s financial situation recommended the closure. The school has been running in a deficit for years. The school, which is run by Center Grove Christian Church, currently has 130 children from kindergarten through the fifth grade. The 1500-member congregation at Center Grove Christian Church will vote on closing the school and day care this Sunday. (WXII / MSNBC)

Good news from the front lines: The U.S.-led Coalition saying that a three-year-old Iraqi girl, discovered by Marines operating in the Al Anbar Province, was diagnosed as having a congenital heart defect. The surgeon then made arrangements with the Children’s Hospital at Nashville’s Vanderbilt University. The Marines airlifted the little girl to the Jordanian border earlier this week. A medical team escorted the girl and her mom to Nashville. Vanderbilt’s Children’s Hospital has agreed to perform the open heart surgery at no cost to the family.

I-85 southbound near the split with Interstate 40 in Greensboro was closed last night after a high speed chase between an off duty officer and a reported robber ended near Creekridge Road. The robbery happened at Four Seasons Town Center. According to police, an altercation occurred and the suspect was shot by the officer. The off duty officer was taken to Moses Cone Hospital. I-85 southbound near the split with Interstate 40 in Greensboro was closed last night after a high speed chase between an off duty officer and a reported robber ended near Creekridge Road. The robbery happened at Four Seasons Town Center. According to police, an altercation occurred and the suspect was shot by the officer. The off duty officer was taken to Moses Cone Hospital. Whole Foods is phasing out traditional disposable plastic grocery bags. The decision covers all of the company's 270 stores in the U.S., Canada and the United Kingdom. Whole Foods says it wants to stop using the plastic bags by Earth Day, April 22.

NEARLY THREE HUNRED PEOPLE IN SOUTHERN SUDAN RECENTLY HAD THEIR SIGHT RESTORED THANKS TO THE MEDICAL WORK OF TWO CHRISTIAN MISSIONARY ORGANIZATIONS. Mission Aviation Fellowship flew a team from Christian Blind Mission into the southern portion of Sudan. Christian Today-dot-com reports that, in all, the team examined about six hundred patients during their stay in the region. Half of those patients were suffering from what is known as river blindness. The medical team operated on some of the patients and administered medicine to others.

New study: found that radiation from a cell phone can cause insomnia, headaches and confusion and may reduce the amount of deep sleep, thus interfering with the body's ability to refresh itself. The study funded by the cell phone industry conducted by researchers from Wayne State University in Detroit and an Institute in Sweden.

One of many MLK events going on today…Actor Levar Burton (host of Reading Rainbow) will speak and the choirs from Wake Forest and WSSU will perform at Wait Chapel tonight at 7pm. A new study suggesting that caffeine consumption during pregnancy increases the risk of miscarriage. The study showed that women who consume 200 milligrams or more of caffeine a day (that’s two or more cups of regular coffee or five cans of caffeinated soda) had twice the miscarriage risk as women who consumed no caffeine. The study sponsored by Kaiser Permanente.
Terry Grier is heading west. The superintendent for the Guilford County school system has been selected as the new superintendent for the San Diego Unified School District. Grier will begin in California on July 1st.

In terms of numbers, that translates to over one million abortions were performed in 2005. A wintry nor'easter will keep students in Boston at home on Monday. The Northeast could get between 6 to 10 inches of snow.
Police in Shreveport, Louisiana are casting doubt on reported sightings of a man charged with murder in the death of a pregnant Marine. Authorities in North Carolina have charged Marine Corporal Cesar Laurean with murder in the death of Lance Corporal Maria Lauterbach.
Lauterbach was eight months pregnant when last reported seen. An adult and an un-born baby were unearthed in shallow grave near Laurean's home on Saturday. (Fox News)
Presidential candidates making one last push through Michigan today…before Primaries on Tuesday. Attention then turns to Nevada, where the primary is being held this Saturday. The ban was imposed in mid-October because of the worsening drought. Another statewide burn ban could be reinstated if conditions change.
Mike Huckabee and Barack Obama tops in Iowa. Republican Mitt Romney and Democrat John Edwards coming in second. Hillary Clinton coming in third behind Edwards. GOP candidates Fred Thompson and John McCain essentially tying for third. Democratic candidates Joe Biden and Chris Dodd have dropped out of the race for President after poor showings in Iowa. For everyone else…it’s on to New Hampshire.
More bad news for Brittney: CNN reporting that Pop star Britney Spears was taken to the hospital for a psychological evaluation after police were called to her home last night because of a heated custody battle.

Getting warmer next week: Expected High on Monday…60 degrees
Continuing story: Close to 8,000 homes and businesses without power this morning in western Forsyth and northwestern Guilford Counties. Traffic lights out in the effected area. Could be at least 10am until crews get the power back on. 1-800-Power-on to report an outage.
Citrus growers in the South are keeping a close eye on their crops this morning. The National Weather Service has issued a hard freeze warning from northern Florida westward through eastern Texas this morning.

Police are looking for a white Ford F150 pickup with a camper shell.

The Northwest North Carolina Chapter of the American Red Cross has been awarded a brand new 2008 H-3 Hummer. The GM Foundation donated the H3 last week. Officials saying that the new Hummer is a perfect addition to the disaster relief vehicle fleet because of its versatility. The foundation said it plans to donate 72 of the vehicles to Red Cross chapters nationwide by 2010, along with $600,000 to help pay for disaster relief efforts.

A fire Wednesday morning damaged the Golden Corral restaurant on Garden Road in Burlington. Burlington firefighters got the blaze under control within an hour. The fire is still under investigation.
State transportation officials plan to decide in the next two weeks how to proceed with building a new bridge to Sunset Beach. Opponents believe the high-rise plan is overkill, and instead want a smaller structure similar to the bridge that crosses the Intracoastal Waterway near Wilmington.
The roughly mile-long bridge would replace an existing bridge that is more than 50 years old. The new bridge is expected to be complete in 2010.

The aid workers had claimed they thought the children were orphans from Sudan. The French defendants were sentenced to eight years of hard labor. In all, the aid workers were accused of attempting to kidnap one-hundred-and-three African children.

One of only three known remaining US World War I veterans has died. J. Russell Coffey passed away yesterday at the age of 109. He had been living in a nursing home in North Baltimore, Ohio. State Bank & Trust in Fargo, North Dakota is giving its full-time employees $1,000 dollars each and part-time employees $500 dollars each. With one condition -- use the money for people in need. Fourteen African countries may be on the verge of the worst meningitis outbreak in a decade. The first indications of an epidemic could appear in February or March. Red Cross officials saying that meningitis is one of the most feared epidemic diseases in Africa…because of its rapid onset, high fatality rates. One of only three known remaining US World War I veterans has died. J. Russell Coffey passed away yesterday at the age of 109. He had been living in a nursing home in North Baltimore, Ohio. State Bank & Trust in Fargo, North Dakota is giving its full-time employees $1,000 dollars each and part-time employees $500 dollars each. With one condition -- use the money for people in need. All part a half a million dollar "Pay it Forward" initiative by the bank. Employees were told not to use the money for themselves. The bank asked each employee to document the good deed with a video camera. The deadline is June 30. A school bus driver and a student were taken to High Point Regional Hospital yesterday afternoon after a tractor-trailer ran a stoplight and struck their bus, which sent the bus into a telephone pole. The accident happened at the intersection of Fairfield Road and Baker Road in High Point. Greensboro police cancelled an Amber Alert late yesterday morning after7 month old Brionna Michelle Johnson was turned over to authorities. Greensboro police said that the girl’s father (Quito Johnson) violated a domestic order and took the child. The dad turned himself into police around noon on Wednesday.
Four members of a family in Northern California who ventured out into the woods in search of a Christmas tree on Sunday have been rescued. The dad (Frederick Dominguez) and his three children were spotted by a California Highway Patrol helicopter yesterday afternoon. The dad was waving to the helicopter, and used twigs to spell out the word help. All four were taken to the hospital…treated and released.

Prosecutors in Aruba have dismissed the case against the three main suspects in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway. The Alabama teen disappeared while on a graduation trip to Aruba two and a half years ago. Her body was never found.
A teenager whose appendix ruptured while she was on a cruise ship, hundreds of miles from help, received an unusual rescue over the weekend. An SOS call was answered by the US Navy. Crews aboard the USS Ronald Reagan airlifted 14 year old Laura Montero from the Dawn Princess cruise ship to the aircraft carrier for emergency surgery. Laura is expected to make a full recovery and should be back home by Christmas.
A 7.2 magnitude earthquake rattled Alaska's Aleutian Islands overnight. The Aleutian Islands are a chain of more than 300 islands that extend southwestward from Alaska into the northern Pacific Ocean.
A 710-year-old copy of the English law document known as the Magna Carta was auctioned off for $21.3 million dollars. Turkish troops have crossed into Northern Iraq. Al Jazeera TV reporting that about three hundred troops from Turkey entered Kurdish territory earlier today. Two days after launching Air strikes against Kurdish rebels in Northern Iraq.
A new portion of the Western Urban Loop in Greensboro opens this morning. The new four mile section runs north and south between Bryan Blvd and I-40. The southern bypass was completed in 2004.
The state's drought will cost North Carolina's agriculture economy $573 million dollars in 2007. The study, released by Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler, finding that soybean farmers have been hit the hardest. http://www.wxii12.com/news/14873218/detail.html

-47% of U.S. adult Internet users have looked for information about themselves through Google or another search engine.
-Americans under 50 and those with more education and income were more likely to self-Google.
-53% of adult Internet users admit to looking up information about someone else (excluding celebrities).

Better late than never? OBERLIN, Kansas (AP) - A postcard featuring a color drawing of Santa Claus and a young girl just arrived in northwest Kansas…a little late. It was mailed back in 1914. The Christmas card was dated December 23, 1914, and mailed to Ethel Martin of Oberlin, Kansas, apparently from her cousins in Nebraska.
The post office in Oberlin wanted to get the card to Ethel Martin. But, Ms Martin has past on…so the 93 year old card ended up with Bernice Martin, Ethel's sister-in-law.
The card was placed inside another envelope with modern postage for the trip to Oberlin - the one-cent postage of the early 20th century wouldn't have covered it, Martin said. Bah-Humbug? Greensboro Police arresting 19-year-old Kevin Michael Feeley in connection with the vandalism of an outdoor Nativity scene at Greensboro College. The Nativity was vandalized back on December 8th. Feeley is a student at UNC-Greensboro and charged with injury to personal property.
The Pioneer Family Restaurant in Archdale had their outdoor Christmas decorations stolen last week. Owners of the restaurant put up a message for the thieves… “May God Bless whoever stole our Christmas lights.” The stolen decorations were worth a couple hundred dollars.
A cream made with caffeine may make women's thighs slimmer.According to a report in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, Brazilian researchers studied 99 women treated with a cream consisting mostly of a 7 percent caffeine solution. The women used the cream twice daily for 30 days. When the researchers took their subjects' measurements at the end of the study, more than 80 percent of the women had a reduction in the circumference of their upper and lower thighs. Nearly 68 percent also reduced their hip measurements.

A major winter storm leaving snow and ice from Indiana to Maine. Close to a foot of snow has blanketed the Northeast. Winter Storm Watches will likely be in effect through the weekend. Freezing rain is in the forecast for parts of Pennsylvania, New York and southern New England. WINTER OFFICIALLY BEGIN on DECEMBER 22nd.
A teenage girl and her younger brother were attacked by two rottweilers while they were waiting for the bus yesterday morning on Conrad Street in Lexington. Both were taken to High Point Regional Hospital and treated for cuts and bruises. Both were treated and released. The rottweilers were seized and are being checked for rabies. Police have charged the owner with violating a county ordinance for dangerous dogs.
Walkertown Elementary School was briefly locked down on Thursday after a ‘hunter’ was spotted near the school's property. The man, who was carrying a gun, was not breaking any laws. Officials put the school into lock down mode as a precaution. The hunter was never on school property.

The Winter Storm that has shut down portions of 5 states in the mid-west is now over New England. Heavy snow warnings have been posted from southern New York and northeastern Pennsylvania to much of Southern New England. Accumulations may be in the 5 to 10-inch range.
North Carolina facing the worst drought in the state's recorded history. Governor Easley is warning people across the state if they don't take water conservation seriously…that he will. Easley said he would use his emergency powers to place a limit on the daily amount of water some communities could use.
Merck & Company has recalled 1.2 million doses of the Type B Hib vaccine, a common childhood vaccine, due to potential contamination during the manufacturing process. Officials with Merck claim that the recalled vaccine does not pose a health threat.
The Type B Hib vaccine is recommended for all children under 5 (and usually given in a three-shot series, starting at 2 months of age.)

A FEDERAL STATE OF EMERGENCY HAS BEEN DECLARED FOR OKLAHOMA TO HELP IN THE CLEAN UP FROM THE RECENT ICE STORMS. Hundreds of thousands of people remain without power in Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, and Illinois because of those ice storms. Many residents have been told they should plan on being without power for several days.
The driver of a tractor-trailer that overturned near King yesterday morning simply fell asleep at the wheel. The chain reaction accident blocked the southbound lanes of US 52 for hours. Police have charged the driver of the big rig with careless and reckless driving, and failure to wear a seat belt. The right lane of SB 52 at Meadowbrook Road will be closed for most of the day…crews will be doing some additional clean up after yesterday’s accident.
Longtime "Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek was hospitalized yesterday after a minor heart attack. Trebek, 67, was admitted to the hospital late Monday night.

Guilford County Schools is the third largest public school system in North Carolina. The Board expects to name a new superintendent on December 18.

Guilford County Schools is the third largest public school system in North Carolina. The Board expects to name a new superintendent on December 18.
The driver of the school bus that overturned near the intersection of Groometown Road and Brandy Road in Greensboro is still in critical condition. The woman who works as a volunteer security guard at New Life Church in Colorado is being hailed as a hero after stopping a gunman who entered the church on Sunday. Jeanne Assam is a former law enforcement officer. Police believe the same gunman is responsible for two fatal shootings at a Youth With A Mission facility some 60 miles away 12 hours earlier. The number of children dying from preventable diseases world wide is at the lowest level on record. A new report from the United Nations found the highest mortality rates for children are in those countries where HIV is widespread and in regions devastated by violent conflict.

Up-Date: NEWS 2 reporting that a school bus rolled over at the intersection of Groometown Road and Brandy Road this morning.
There were six children from Southern Elementary on the bus when it happened.
Troopers say the driver and some of the children were injured. The children have only minor injuries. The bus driver was ejected and suffered critical injuries.
Guilford County school employees called the parents and asked them to meet their children at Moses Cone Hospital. Troopers say the wreck happened after the bus driver ran off the side of the road and overcorrected. http://www.digtriad.com/news/top/article.aspx?storyid=94422&catid=14

The previous Record High is 69 degrees set back in 1972. A State of Emergency has been issued for several Midwestern states including Texas, Kansas and Missouri...because of ice. Two sections of Interstate 40 in Oklahoma were closed temporarily closed on Sunday. In the Northeast: Snow and ice in the forecast tonight across southern New York and New England.
Police in Colorado are still investigating two shootings that happened about 65 miles apart on Sunday…but could they be related? The first attack took place early Sunday morning at a Youth With a Mission facility near Denver. About twelve hours later a gunman opened fire in the parking lot of New Life Church in Colorado Springs, as people were leaving services at the mega church. Nationally known pastor Jack Hayford was the guest speaker at New Life Church yesterday (Sunday). New Life is the church from which Ted Haggard stepped down as pastor amid scandal last year.
NASA will delay the launch of Space Shuttle Atlantis until early January.
The 2008 forecast is already in…it should be an above average Atlantic Hurricane Season next year. William Gray does his annual hurricane forecasting work through the University of Colorado.
The controversial "The Golden Compass" bumping out ‘Enchanted’ from the top spot at the Box Office. ‘The Golden Compass’ having a modest opening weekend compared to such recent December heavyweights as "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Chronicles of Narnia".
